Victoria Royals News Release
Victoria, B.C. - The Victoria Royals announced the signing of defenceman Matthew Keller to a Standard Player Agreement on Monday.
The Calgary, AB native was selected by the club in the fourth round (#74 overall) of the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft held back in December.
Royals Director of Player Personnel Ed Fowler believes Keller has the potential to be a long-term asset on the backend for the Royals organization:
"Matthew is a great person and an excellent two-way defenceman who contributes all over the ice," said Fowler. "He defends well, has a quick stick, and plays with awareness both with and without the puck. He uses his reach well and takes advantage of his size and mobility. We're looking forward to partnering with Matthew and his family in his development, and we're eager to get started with him."
Keller has spent the past three seasons as a member of the EDGE Hockey School academy based in Calgary, AB, where he registered 28 points on four goals and 24 assists in 36 games for the program's U16 Prep team in 2021-2022. He would help lead the Mountaineers to a 31-4-1 regular season record and a berth in the 2022 CSSHL championships.
The 6'2" blueliner also made several appearances for the EDGE U18 Prep team, recording two goals and an assist over eight contests.
