Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, NE - The Omaha Royals opened their final-ever regular season home stand at Rosenblatt Stadium Saturday night with a 12-7 victory over Memphis. A crowd of 8,251 fans watched the Royals move alone into second place in the PCL American Conference North, a spot they shared with the Redbirds entering the night. Iowa edged Nashville 4-3 in Des Moines to remain 2.5 games ahead of the Royals.
The starting pitchers for both Omaha and Memphis - who each had success in this season series - were roughed up tonight. Royals righty Matt Herges (7-3) was able to get the win, despite allowing six runs on nine hits over 5.0 innings. Memphis starter Oneli Perez (2-6) surrendered seven runs - six earned - on five hits and five walks in just 2.0-plus frames.
The game was tight heading into the bottom of the eighth, with Omaha clinging to an 8-7 lead. Scott Thorman put it away by driving a grand slam off the right field foul pole for his 18th home run of the season. It was just the third slam of the year for the Royals, who won for the 11th time in their last 14 games.
Gil Meche pitched a scoreless inning of relief, walking one batter, in his first rehab assignment appearance. Victor Marte retired only two of the five Memphis batters he faced, yielding Nick Stavinoha's fifth round-tripper in 14 tilts with the Redbirds that cut the Royals' lead to 8-7. But, Tim Collins celebrated his 21st birthday by limiting Memphis to one hit over the final 2.1 scoreless innings, striking out three, to pick up his second Triple-A save.
David Lough went 4-for-4 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored. He also collected three of Omaha's six stolen bases. It marked the first time the Royals swiped six bases in a game since August 17, 2002 at Nashville.
Jarrod Dyson chipped in with two stolen bases, a couple hits and three runs scored. Memphis catcher Steven Hill had a tough night behind the plate, throwing out only one runner trying to steal, but at the plate he was 2-for-4 with an RBI double and a two-run homer.
Omaha (71-57) is now 6-7 this year vs. Memphis (70-58) which lost for the first time in four games and just the fourth time in their last 12 contests.
Game 2 of the series is Sunday at 1:35 p.m. Royals lefty Edgar Osuna (0-3, 10.38) faces Redbirds southpaw Evan MacLane (6-7, 4.26).
It's U.S. Bank Family FUNday, with clowns, face painting and balloon art. Subway Kids Club members get in FREE and following the game all kids are invited to run the bases with Casey, presented by Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church. The day is also presented by KGBI 100.7 FM, Fox 42 and Family Spectrum Magazine.
