February 28, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Victoria Royals News Release
Victoria, B.C. - Tyler Palmer of the Victoria Royals has been named the Western Hockey League's Goaltender of the Week after a pair of dominating performances against the Vancouver Giants.
The 18-year-old recorded his second career shutout on Monday, Feb. 21, stopping all 35 shots in a 3-0 victory over Vancouver. He would follow up with another win on Saturday, Feb. 26, making 28 of 30 saves while holding the Giants scoreless for the first 55 minutes of the game.
While he remains thankful for the personal recognition, Palmer was quick to credit his teammates for aiding his recent success:
"The team playing well in-front of me really helps," said Palmer. "That, and focusing on the fundamentals helps me make the saves to get my team the win."
This is the second time this season Palmer has received the Goalie of the Week nomination, previously sharing the award with teammate Campbell Arnold during the week of Dec. 26-Jan.2.
The Fernie, BC product has been the Giants' kryptonite all year long, registering six wins in seven starts and recording two shutouts against them. In the two starts made against Vancouver last week, he allowed only two goals while stopping 61 of 63 shots for a 1.00 goals against average (GAA) and a .968 save percentage (SV%).
Head coach and general manager Dan Price was impressed with the consistency his young net-minder demonstrated throughout the week:
"Tyler was solid," said Price. "He kept the games under control and made big saves when we needed them. [He] has demonstrated a very strong competitive mindset all season and takes his preparation very seriously, while still having fun and enjoying life and hockey every day."
Palmer has emerged as one of the top young goaltending prospects in the league in 2021-2022, leading all rookie net-minders with a .906 SV% while facing the fifth-most shots of any WHL goaltender (1122).
His overall record stands at 10-16-2-0 on the year and he owns a 3.69 GAA to go along with the previously mentioned 906 SV%.
Palmer will look to continue his success this weekend when the Royals head to the Okanagan for a pair of games against the Kelowna Rockets and Kamloops Blazers, beginning Friday, Mar. 4.
