Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
APRIL 27, 2006, 7:05 p.m. : OMAHA ROYALS (11-8) vs. Round Rock Express (9-9)
HOME: 7-4 (35-37 in '05) AWAY: 4-4 (37-35 in '05) vs. Round Rock: 0-0 (10-6 in '05)
TODAY: The Royals host the Round Rock Express in a 7:05 p.m. game at Rosenblatt Stadium. It's the opener of a 4-game series. Omaha is 2-1 on the homestand, with the series finale vs. Memphis on Tuesday rained out. Tonight is the 1st Thursty Thursday of 2006, featuring drink specials courtesy of Miller Brands and Z-92! Air-time is 6:45 p.m. on Magic 1490 and at www.Oroyals.com.
LAST GAME: Danny Tamayo (2-1) pitched 4.1 scoreless innings of relief, helping the Royals to a 3-1 victory over Memphis Monday night. Right-hander Adam Bernero, in his 1st start of the season, was relieved by Tamayo with 2 runners on base and 2 outs in the 5th and Omaha leading 2-0. Brian Daubach ripped Tamayo's 1st pitch for an RBI double to right. Tamayo allowed just 1 hit the rest of the way, walking 1 and striking out 3. Former Royal Dennis Tankersley (0-3) took the loss, despite allowing only 2 runs in 6.0 innings.
ROYALS REPORT: Royals center fielder Kerry Robinson delayed the start of Monday night's game by 5 minutes and then left following the 4th inning with chest pains. The discomfort was reportedly caused by a spasm in his rib cage muscle that happened when he was laughing at the antics of a youth team on the field before the game. Chip Ambres was moved from left field to right field in the 5th, with Aaron Guiel taking over in center. With high winds wreaking havoc for outfielders all night, Ambres made two great grabs in the top of the 5th to help the Royals preserve the lead. He hauled in leadoff batter Travis Hanson's drive to warning track in right-center. Then, with 2 runners in scoring position following Daubach's RBI double, Ambres snagged Michel Hernandez' liner down the right field line to end the inning. Before Robinson left Monday's game, his 1st inning single ran his hitting streak to 7 games (.448, 13-29). *** Justin Huber also came out of Monday night's contest following the 4th, after he dislocated his right pinky finger as he dove back towards 1st base while being picked off by Tankersley. Following the game, trainer Jeff Stevenson said Huber may be back in action towards the end of this week. *** Paul Phillips went 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored Monday night. He has hit in 7 of his last 8 contests (.444, 12-27, 7 R). *** Mike Aviles also has a hit in 7 of his past 8 games, going 11-for-32 (.344) with 2 homers and 7 RBI. *** Ricky Bell entered Monday's game in the leadoff spot in the 5th inning and went 0-for-3, halting his 6-game hit string. *** Andres Blanco has hit in 4 straight tilts (.467, 7-15) and in 10 of the past 12 games. Over that longer span, the Royals shortstop is hitting .400 (18-45) with 12 RBI. He leads the club with a .354 average.
STARTERS: RH Jason Hirsh (1-1, 5.75) vs. RH Brian Bass (0-2, 6.92)
Bass makes his 4th start of the season. In his last start at Nashville last Thursday, Bass took the loss in a 7-2 setback (2.0 IP, 6 H, 7 R-2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K). He led the Wranglers in wins, going 12-8 with a 5.24 ERA in 27 starts. Bass was 8-2 with a 4.13 ERA in 13 starts at home, compared to a 4-6 record and 6.26 ERA in 14 outings on the road. He posted a 4-0 record in 5 July starts with a 4.24 ERA, his lowest monthly mark of the season. Bass pitched for Surprise in the Arizona Fall League, going 1-1 with a 3.33 ERA in 6 starts.
