Reading Royals News Release
Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League, today announced that forward Kevin Goumas has been selected the Sher-Wood Hockey ECHL Player of the Week for March 7-14, 2015. In three games this past week, Goumas scored five goals, assisted on five others (ten points) and played to a plus-7 (+7). He scored the game winner in two of three victories recorded by the Royals last weekend.
Goumas, a second year pro from Merrick, New York, was loaned to the Royals last week from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in the AHL, where he has thirteen points (6g-7a) in fifty-eight games this season. In his first game back with the Royals since the team's second game of the regular season (in which Goumas scored the game winner in a 6-0 win over the South Carolina Stingrays on October 18, 2015), he bagged three points (1g-2a), which included scoring the game winning goal in that game, as well - a 5-1 win over the Manchester Monarchs on Friday. Goumas followed that up by becoming only the second player in Royals' team history to register six points (3g-3a) in a single game in Sunday's 7-4 win over the Monarchs. In that game, he tied the team-season record by playing to a plus-4 (+4). He then capped the weekend by scoring the lone goal in Sunday's 1-0 win in Lake Placid, becoming the first (and only - to this point) player to score a pro goal at historic Herb Brooks Arena.
Goumas, who is currently riding a four game goal scoring streak, has recorded at least one point in each of the five games he's played for the Royals (6g-6a) this year, and in that time he has scored three game winners, two power play goals, and two "first goals' for the team.
This marks the eighteenth time in the fifteen year history of the Royals that one of the team's players has been named as the ECHL Player of the Week. Goumas is the first Royal to win the award since Sean Wiles claimed the honor on January 12, 2014. Goumas joins fifteen other skaters to have won the award including Chris Blight, Brendan Brooks, Ryan Cruthers, Stefano Giliati (twice), Ben Gordon (twice), Greg Hogeboom, Ryan Kinasewich, Olivier Labelle, Brian McCullough, Mike Pandolfo, Yannick Riendeau, Andrew Sarauer, Daniel Steiner, Shay Stephenson, and Wiles.
On behalf of Goumas, a case of pucks will be donated to a Reading youth hockey organization by Sher-Wood"ËHockey, the exclusive puck supplier of the ECHL. Since beginning its sponsorship of the award in 2000-01, Sher-Wood Hockey has donated more than 33,000 pucks to youth hockey organizations in ECHL cities.
The Royals return to action on Friday (March 18 @ 7:30 pm), when the team travels to Norfolk, Virginia, to face the Norfolk Admirals at The Scope Arena. The game night broadcast for Friday's matchup can be heard on CBS SportsRadio 1240 am and 98.5 in Reading, Pennsylvania, starting with the pre-game warm-up show presented by Highmark Blue Shield at 7:00 pm Eastern Time. Friday's game will be televised locally in Berks County, Pennsylvania, on BCTV courtesy of Boscov's Travel and Apple Vacations. Streaming video will be available on ECHL.TV on a pay per view basis. Streaming audio is available free of charge on the Royals website.
