Royals Fall to Broncos

Swift Current, SK - On Tuesday night the Victoria Royals continued their six game road trip as they took on the Swift Current Broncos at the Credit Union i-plex. Victoria gave Keith Hamilton the start in net, while the Broncos countered with Jon Groenheyde.

Victoria looked to gain the upper hand early after being awarded a power-play 5:44 into the first frame. A Jordan Fransoo point shot created a scramble in front of the Broncos' net but the Royals were unable to bury the rebound. Swift Current would get on the board first when Brad Hoban caused a turnover in the Royals' zone and deked to his backhand to beat Hamilton on his stick side. Despite two minutes of fast-paced four-on-four hockey late in the period the teams would head to the dressing room with the Broncos leading 1-0.

Victoria came out strong to start the second period having outshot Swift Current 8-0 in the first five minutes. The Broncos' Colby Cave tried to shift the momentum when he found himself all alone in front of Hamilton but was denied by the right pad of the Victoria netminder. Just before the halfway point of the period Royals' forward Tim Traber and Swift Current's Daniel Dale would square off in a spirited tilt. Traber would land several early blows to take the decision. Victoria evened the score at 15:49 just as a power-play opportunity ended. Jordan Fransoo accepted a Hayden Rintoul pass at the left point and fired a shot on net that was neatly tipped home by forward Robin Soudek for his 18th goal of the season. Swift Current's Taylor Vause would restore the Broncos' lead when he accepted a cross-ice slap pass from defenseman Richard Nedomlel and deposited the puck into the open net. After forty minutes, the Broncos led 2-1.

Victoria continued to carry the bulk of possession to open the third period but were unable to solve Groenheyde. Swift Current increased their lead on the power-play at 11:55 when Nedomlel's centering pass created a goal mouth scramble before Reece Scarlett jumped on the loose puck and found the back of the net. Victoria pulled Hamilton with just over two minutes left for the extra attacker but were unable to add another marker before the end of the game. Swift Current 3 Victoria 1.

Victoria went 0/2 0.0% on the power play, while Swift Current was 1/2 50.0%. The Royals outshot the Broncos 39-28.

Victoria travels to Moose Jaw on Wednesday, January 18th to take on the Warriors at Mosaic Place in the Royals' fourth straight game away from home. Puck drop is set for 5:00p.m. P.S.T.
