Victoria, BC - In a Tuesday night contest at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, the Victoria Royals took on the Portland Winterhawks in the second half of a two-game home series. The Royals started Coleman Vollrath in net, while the Winterhawks countered with Mac Carruth.

The first period was a tight affair as both teams tried to solve their opposing net minders, but it wasn't until late in the period that Victoria opened the scoring. Taylor Crunk netted his third goal of the season with 28 seconds left in the frame to give the Royals the lead. Crunk collected a turnover in the left corner of the Portland zone before he backhanded the puck towards the net. The puck bounced off of a Winterhawks defenceman and into the back of the net to give the home side a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.

Portland tied the game on a powerplay goal by Ty Rattie at 4:01 of the middle frame. Vollrath got a piece of Rattie's wrist shot from the left face-off circle, but the puck squeaked under his arm. Dominic Turgeon later gave the Winterhawks a 2-1 lead at 10:21. Turgeon was stationed at the top of the Victoria crease where he slipped a loose puck under the right pad of the Royals' goaltender. Brendan Leipsic gave Portland a two-goal lead at 15:51 when he one-timed a pass at the bottom of the right face-off circle past Vollrath. Taylor Peters rounded out the scoring for Portland in the second at 17:17 with a shorthanded strike that gave the Winterhawks a 4-1 lead headed into the second intermission.

The Royals had an opportunity to cut into the Portland lead midway through the third period when Logan Nelson was sprung on a breakaway. Nelson cleanly beat Carruth with a move to his backhand, but it was ruled the puck did not cross the goal line after a brief review. Carruth was then relieved in the Portland goal by Brendan Burke who went on to make five saves and secure the win for the visiting team. Winterhawks 4 Royals 1.

Victoria went 0/60.0% on the powerplay, while Portland went 1/425.0%. The Winterhawks outshot the Royals 44-26.

Victoria will play host to the Everett Silvertips on Friday, March 15th for the last regular season home game of the year. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m.
