Shark Snap Shot: The Worcester Sharks (25-17-3-2, 55pts) chomped four out of a possible six points in three games last week to kick off a five game road trip. The Sharks defeated the Phantoms in Lehigh Valley 4-3 on Feb 4 for Roy Sommer's 600th AHL win behind the bench followed by a 3-0 shutout loss to the Admirals in Norfolk on Feb 6. Worcester closed out the week with an impressive 4-0 win in Norfolk on Feb 7 before taking the 12 hour bus drive back to Worcester with 2-1-0-0 record last week on the road.
Worcester sits in 2nd place in the Atlantic Division with 55 points (25-17-3-2) and 7th overall in the Eastern Conference. The Sharks are 15-5-1-2 in their last 23 games and continue to climb up the Eastern Conference standings.
Highlights from the week include strong efforts from Ryan Carpenter (2-2-4) and Eriah Hayes (1-2-3) to lead the way offensively for Worcester in three games. Aaron Dell picked up his 2nd shutout of the season with 38 saves on Feb 7 at the Admirals and went 2-1-0 last week with a .949 save %. John McCarthy (1-2-3) and Micheal Haley (2-0-2) were both solid up front while Gus Young (0-2-2) and Matt Taormina (0-2-2) held down the blue line. Special teams were impressive as the power play went 4-17 23.5% and the penalty kill went 9-10 90% in three games last week.
The AHL announced on Jan 30 that the Worcester Sharks are to move to San Jose, CA after the season and join a new Pacific Division for the 2015-16 season. More information can be found by clicking HERE.
Last week saw the Sharks sign forwards Trevor Parkes (Greenville ECHL) and Spencer Asuchak (Allen ECHL) to PTO's on Feb 3. Asuchak was released after three scoreless games on Feb 8 while Parkes earned a SPC (standard player contract) for the rest of the season on Feb 9. Chris Tierney was recalled from Worcester on Feb 3 to San Jose and Tierney scored his first NHL goal on Feb 5 at Vancouver. Dylan Demelo received his 2nd NHL recall after the game in Norfolk on Feb 7 and the Sharks signed Jackson Winkler as an emergency goaltender on Feb 7 after JP Anderson became ill earlier in the day. In addition the Worcester Sharks recalled Chris Crane (Missouri), Rylan Schwartz (Allen), and Nick Jones (Indy) from the ECHL on Feb 8. As of Feb 11, Matt Tennyson, Melker Karlsson, Tomas Hertl, Mirco Muller, Barclay Goodrow, Daniil Tarasov, and Dylan Demelo are with the SJ Sharks.

The Worcester Sharks player of the week nominee is rookie forward Ryan Carpenter. The 24-year-old from Oviedo, FL recorded four points (2-2-4) and nine shots in three games last week to lead the way offensively for the Worcester Sharks.

MILESTONE ALERT:
Head Coach Roy Sommer surpassed Frank Mathers (1256 games coached) for the most games coached in AHL history on March 26 in the Sharks 5-3 win in Lewiston, ME over the Portland Pirates. Coach Sommer has coached 1315 AHL games - all with the SJ Sharks AHL affiliates. In total, Coach Sommer has been a head coach in 1,651 games in the AHL and ECHL. Roy surpassed John Paddock (589) for the 3rd most wins in AHL history in the Sharks 3-1 win in Providence on Jan 4. Coach Sommer picked up his 600th career AHL win in a 4-3 victory in Lehigh Valley on Feb 4 and is now nine wins away from tying Frank Mathers (610 wins) for 2nd all-time in AHL history.

Chris scored his 1st NHL goal vs. Ryan Miller in the Sharks 5-1 win in Vancouver on Feb 5. Tierney ranks 16th in the AHL in rookie points despite playing in just 26 AHL games.
* AHL rookie Jeremy Langlois ranks 10th among AHL rookies with 26 points (16-10-26) in 42 games. His 16 goals are tops among AHL rookies. - Langlois is currently sidelined with a foot injury and has missed the last three games.
* Melker Karlsson has been impressive so far with the San Jose Sharks. Melker has 14 points (9-5-14) in 26 games with San Jose since his recall on Dec 8. He scored his 1st NHL goal on Dec 22 at Anaheim and also had a five game goal scoring streak!
* Daniil Tarasov is 3rd on Worcester with 25 points (10-15-25) in 41 games this season. Daniil is currently on recall with the SJ Sharks and made his NHL debut on Feb 5 and recorded an assist on Chris Tierney's first NHL goal. Tarasov has played two games for San Jose this season (0-1-1) but is currently on the IR.
* Freddie Hamilton is 1st on the Worcester Sharks with 27 points (9-18-27) in 44 games and has played one game for the SJ Sharks this season (0-0-0).
* Matt Taormina leads all Worcester d-men with 23 points (6-17-23) in 44 games. Matt picked up his 100th AHL assist vs. the Monarchs on Dec 26 and was selected to play in the AHL All Star Classic where he collected two assists. Taormina ranks 20th in AHL among defensemen in points.
Taylor Fedun is 2nd among Worcester defensemen in points (22) and 1st on the club with 19 assists in 44 games.
* Micheal Haley is 2nd on the club in goals (13), leads the club in fighting majors (8), and tops in penalty minutes (76). Haley picked up his 1,000th AHL penalty minute on Dec 13 and has also played four games with the San Jose Sharks this season. Haley ranks 3rd in the AHL with a 24.1 shooting percentage. Haley leads Worcester in power play goals (5) and game winners (4).
* Goaltender Troy Grosenick has a 15-6-1 record in Worcester with a 2.67 GAA and a .905 save %. Grosenick made his NHL debut on Nov 16 and set an NHL record for most saves in a shutout by a goaltender making his NHL debut (45) in the SJ Sharks 2-0 win at Carolina. Troy went 1-1-0 in two starts for the SJ Sharks and is currently in Worcester and is riding a six game win streak and is 8-1-2 in his last 11 starts overall. - Grosenick has missed his last nine starts due to injury.
* The Worcester Sharks are the least penalized team in the AHL with only 10.28 penalty minutes per game and have allowed the fewest amount of power play goals against (21).

The Worcester Sharks (24-16-3-2, 53pts) kicked off a five game road trip with a 4-3 win over the Lehigh Valley Phantoms (21-18-4-1, 47pts) in front of 6,471 fans at the PPL Center on Wednesday evening. With the victory, head coach Roy Sommer became just the third coach in AHL history to hit the 600 win plateau joining Frank Mathers (610) and Fred "Bun" Cook (636). Ryan Carpenter, Eriah Hayes, Bryan Lerg, and Micheal Haley all scored goals for Worcester while Aaron Dell made 30 saves in net for Worcester for his second straight win between the pipes. Matt Taormina and John McCarthy each added two assists as the Sharks jumped into the 6th spot in the Eastern Conference with the win. Rob Zepp made 40 saves in net for the Phantoms while Brandon Manning added three points (1-2-3) but took four minor penalties for Lehigh Valley.
2.6.15 - Norfolk 3 - Worcester 0 - L - Norfolk Scope - Norfolk, VA The Worcester Sharks (24-17-3-2, 53pts) were shutout for the 4th time this season after a 3-0 loss to the host Norfolk Admirals (19-23-3-2, 43pts) in front of 4,584 fans at the Norfolk Scope Arena on Friday evening. Aaron Dell made 25 saves in net for Worcester in his third straight start between the pipes but allowed first period goals to Charles Sarault and Andrew O'Brien. John Gibson made 36 saves between the pipes for Norfolk while Chris Wagner added an empty netter for the Admirals in the Sharks 3-0 road loss.
2.7.15 - Norfolk 0 - Worcester 4 -W - Norfolk Scope - Norfolk, VA
The Worcester Sharks (25-17-3-2, 55pts) picked up a 4-0 win over the host Norfolk Admirals (19-24-3-2, 43pts) in front of 5,818 fans at the Norfolk Scope Arena on Saturday evening. The Sharks are now 2-1-0-0 on their five game road trip with continues in St. John's on Feb 14 at 6pm (EST). John McCarthy, Micheal Haley, Travis Oleksuk, and Ryan Carpenter scored for Worcester while Aaron Dell made 38 saves in net for Worcester in his fourth straight start between the pipes. Veteran netminder Jason LaBarbera made 31 saves between the pipes for Norfolk for the Admirals in the Sharks 4-0 road victory.

The Worcester Sharks (25-17-3-2, 55pts in 47gp) are in 3rd place in the Atlantic Division; which is nine points behind the 1st place Monarchs (64pts in 46gp), percentage points ahead of the 3rd place Pirates (55pts in 48gp), one point ahead of the 4th place Bruins (54pts in 49gp), and six points ahead of the 5th place IceCaps (49pts in 50gp) to round out a very choppy Atlantic Division.

*3rd period goals... Worcester has outscored their opponents 49-33 (+16) in the third period this season...the best goal differential period of the season for the Sharks (-12 in 1st and +5 in 2nd). - the +16 goal differential in the 3rd period is the best in the AHL.

Garrett Stafford and Tomas Plihal scored 12 seconds apart in the second period on Feb 2, 2007 against Bridgeport at the DCU Center. It was only the fourth time in nine seasons the Sharks have scored goals less than 20 seconds apart.
*Fast start... Evan Trupp scored just 22 seconds into the first period on Dec 6 in St. John's and Bryan Lerg scored 15 seconds in vs. Manchester on Dec 26. Graham Mink holds the record for fastest goal just 11 seconds into the game on March 7, 2008.
*Good Boys... the Worcester Sharks are the least penalized team in the AHL averaging 10.28 minutes per game....the Sharks have been shorthanded just 151 times this season (3.21 per game) which is the least times shorthanded in the AHL.

*4 National Champions... The Sharks have four players that won the NCAA Division 1 Championship....
