Chicago Wolves News Release
ROSEMONT, Ill. - Center Pat Cannone scored with 1:14 left in overtime to lead the Chicago Wolves to a 3-2 victory over Midwest Division-leading Milwaukee on Wednesday night in an Amtrak Rivalry contest at Allstate Arena.
Forwards Terry Broadhurst and Jeremy Welsh scored in regulation for the Wolves (25-18-5-3) before Cannone rifled a wrister past Milwaukee goaltender Marek Mazanec's glove during 3-on-3 play in overtime.
"I really loved our effort tonight," said Wolves head coach John Anderson. "It was a hard game for us to win. We had to play very hard and we made some good plays. Our goaltender was strong and our special teams were special."
The Wolves opened the scoring with Broadhurst's power-play goal at 11:18 of the first period. Defenseman Petteri Lindbohm and left wing Magnus Paajarvi exchanged quick passes on the perimeter before Paajarvi held the puck briefly in the right circle. When he spotted Broadhurst open in the slot, he zipped a quick pass that Broadhurst redirected past Mazanec.
The Admirals (28-13-3-4) waited less than two minutes to even the score. Defenseman Ian White flipped a wrister from the right point that was headed wide right, but Triston Grant reached out and tipped White's shot past Wolves goaltender Jordan Binnington.
Milwaukee took a 2-1 lead at 14:57 of the first when Colton Sissons pounced on a rebound and batted it home while Binnington battled to disengage from Admirals forward Richard Clune in the crease.
Chicago had to kill three minors in a 4 minute, 3-second stretch in the second period - including 1:57 of 5-on-3 time - before turning a fourth penalty into a short-handed goal that knotted it 2-2 at 17:40.
Rob Bordson carried the puck through the neutral zone and across the blue line, but pulled up at the top of the right circle to wait for Welsh to speed through the slot. When Bordson flipped a pass toward the net, Welsh flashed open just in time to tip the puck past Mazanec.
Cannone's game-winner was set up by right wing Shane Harper, who extended the AHL's longest active point streak to 10 games.
"There's a lot of ice, so you want to try to beat a guy or make a strong defensive play and catch a team cheating," Cannone said. "It's a lot of fun. We love it."
Binnington (16-9-3) stopped 20 of 22 shots as he and the Wolves extended their winning streaks to three games. Mazanec (15-8-4) posted 27 saves in the loss.
The Wolves continue their seven-game homestand with a 7 p.m. game Friday against Western Conference leader Oklahoma City. To find the best deals on tickets, visit ChicagoWolves.com or call 1-800-THE-WOLVES.
