Brockton Rox News Release
Quebec City, Quebec (June 21, 2007) - The Quebec Capitales struck for three runs in the bottom of the third inning against a previously untouchable RHP John Kelly en route to a 4-1 win in the series finale at Le Stade Municipal and series sweep of the Rox. Brockton has lost four in a row and seven of eight games, including four of five to Quebec. 1B Francisco Lebron had two hits in the loss and five in the series against his former team. Kelly pitched well outside of the third frame, allowing just six hits in seven innings while striking out five. The Rox are now 12-15 and head to Worcester for at three- game series this weekend.
Quebec RHP Karl Gelinas entered the game with the league's 10th best ERA. He gave up two hits in the first inning but the Rox left both runners aboard, and Gelinas pitched out of a another two-on jam in the second. In the bottom of the third in a scoreless game, Quebec put runners at the corners against Kelly with back-to-back singles. CF Goefrey Tomlinson got Quebec on the scoreboard with an RBI double, and scored pitches later on a two-run single by 2B Boomer Berry, as Quebec took a 3-0 lead. Kelly kept the Rox in the game, pitching seven strong innings and holding the Capitales at bay the rest of the game.
The Rox did not score until the game's eighth inning. RF Tony Gonzalez singled with one out and advanced to third base on CF Joe Hough's second hit of the night, a single to right. Facing reliever RHP Cristian Mendoza, C Jason Radwan grounded to first, plating the Rox only run of the night. Mendoza walked two in the top of the ninth inning, and DH Guye Senjem stood in representing the tying run. LHP Brian Dumesnil came into the game with two outs and retired Senjem on a pitch, sending the Capitales fans into a frenzy with the series sweep secured.
Tomorrow, LHP Rolando Viera (2-2, 2.57 ERA) tries to end the Rox's four-game losing streak as he faces the Worcester Tornadoes and RHP Alex Pena (1-1, 7.67 ERA) at Worcester's Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field at 7:05 PM.
