Brockton Rox News Release

BROCKTON, MA - (August 10, 2009) - After a disappointing home stand, the Brockton Rox kicked off an eight-game, seven-day road trip with a double header sweep over the Sussex Skyhawks on Monday night with wins of 6-5 and 7-2.

In the opener, Brockton erased a 4-0 deficit and pushed a game scheduled for seven innings into the eighth with a pair of runs in the sixth. Then in the eighth, C Chris Grossman drove in the decisive runs with a two-out, two-strike, two-run single into centerfield after the inning was kept alive by on of the Skyhawks' six errors on the day.

Rox starter LHP Craig Anderson did not figure in the final decision of that game, but settled in after a rough pair of innings to start in which he surrendered all four Sussex runs. He turned in 3.1 scoreless innings to finish his outing and handed the ball to the bullpen to close it out. RHP Stevie Delabar provided 1.2 hitless innings of relief before ceding to closer RHP Jerry Dunn for the save in the eighth inning. Sussex scored a run off of Dunn in the final inning on a sacrifice fly, but he held on for his 17th save of the year.

In the night cap, the Rox jumped out for five runs in the first three innings, capped by 2B Melvin Falu's two-run home run in the third, just before the game went into an hour-long rain delay.

Meanwhile, Rox starter RHP Buster Lussier cruised through five innings in his second start, and allowed two runs (one earned) on just four hits, and pitched three more innings after sitting for an hour during the weather delay.

The Rox added runs in the fourth and sixth innings while Sussex only answered with a solo home run by LF Ryan Crespi in the fifth. LHP Brad Hertzler and RHP Matt Zachary recorded the final six outs for the Rox, capping a solid day for a bullpen which provided 4.2 innings overall and surrendered just one run.

The Rox and Skyhawks re-take the field for a single, nine-inning game on Tuesday night at Skylands Park in Augusta, NJ. Rox RHP Jeff Long (3-4, 4.17 ERA) will face Sussex RHP Mike Schellinger (4-5, 4.72 ERA). Tuesday's first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
