Brockton Rox News Release
Little Falls, N.J. - The Brockton Rox scored three runs in the ninth inning to tie the game and force extras, but for the second straight night the New Jersey Jackals prevailed in extra fames, 7-6, on Tuesday evening at Yogi Berra Stadium. The Rox are 2-7 this season in games played at New Jersey.
As they did last night, the Rox (4-5 second half, 31-25 overall) took a first-inning lead. Brockton plated two runs on two hits with C *Chris Grossman *drawing a bases-loaded walk and DH *Clyde Williams* bringing home a run with a fielder's choice grounder.
The Jackals (5-3, 24-30) cut the Brockton lead in half with an unearned run in the bottom half of the first. 1B Jabe Bergeron picked up the RBI with a grounder to the left side of the infield, scoring CF Adam Godwin, who had led off the inning with an infield single.
New Jersey would then grab the lead in the third inning on a two-out, two-run homer from Bergeron. For Bergeron, it was his tenth of the season. Brockton answered back with a tally in the fifth on Grossman's run-scoring single.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Jackals put across two more runs on RBI singles from both Bergeron and C Dean Forthun, to push their advantage to, 6-3. It remained that way until the top of the ninth.
LF *Mike Conroy *led off with a walk in the ninth off New Jersey closer Romas Hicks. Hicks then struck out both CF *Chris Valencia* and 3B *Shawn Williams*. 1B *Melvin Falu* reached when he was hit by a pitch and after two wild pitches scored Conroy, RF *Keith Brachold* drew a walk.
With runners on first and third and two outs, Grossman sent a double down the right-field line, scoring both men, and the Rox tied it, 6-6.
Brockton had two base runners during the three extra innings as a double play in the 11th erased a threat and in the 12th RHP Mike Pontius struck out the side. The Jackals stranded two runners combined in the tenth and 11th, but they were able to cash in in the 12th.
LHP *Brad Hertzler* walked DH Jeff Grose to begin the 12th and then RF Kevin Clark reached on an infield single. Hertzler was replaced by RHP *Hunter Davis*, who retired the next two batters in order.
With runners on second and third, Godwin hit a chopper to the left side of the infield that the defense could not play, and Grose came home with the winning run. Godwin drove in the winning run in the tenth inning last night with an infield hit to the right side of the infield.
Pontius (3-3) picked up the win for the second consecutive night, going two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk with two strikeouts. Hertzler (0-1) suffered the defeat despite a solid outing; 2.2 innings, one run on four hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
Brockton starting RHP *Freddy Flores* dealt just four innings, giving up six runs (three earned) on seven hits with a walk and four punchouts. LHP Ryan Lobban was strong for the Jackals, going six innings and allowing three runs with six hits, two walks and seven strikeouts.
RHP *Colin Lynch *also dealt three scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the Rox. Grossman had a four RBI day, going 2-for-5 with a double and a walk. Conroy reached base multiple times for the eighth straight game, as he was 1-for-3 with two bases on balls.
Bergeron led the Jackals with a 3-for-6 contest, including the two-run homer and two singles. Godwin finished 3-for-7 with the game-winning RBI for the second straight evening.
The three-game series concludes on Wednesday morning in an 11:05 a.m. start at Yogi Berra Stadium. RHP *Jose Aquino *(0-0)* *will make his first start of the year for the Rox against New Jersey LHP Isaac Pavlik (5-3). Brockton will have a day off on Thursday before beginning a four-game home series with the Sussex Skyhawks on Friday night.
