New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - For the second straight night, the New Jersey Jackals defeated the Brockton Rox on an RBI infield single off the bat of center fielder Adam Godwin in extra innings. Tuesday night's heroics carried New Jersey past Brockton 7-6 in the bottom of the 12th inning after four hours and four minutes. The victory extends New Jersey's season-long winning streak to five games.

Trailing 6-3 heading into the top of the ninth inning, Brockton plated three runs on just one hit against Jackals closer Romas Hicks to tie the contest. A pair of wild pitches allowed one run to score before catcher Chris Grossman laced a two-run double to right with two outs to send the game into extra innings. Grossman finished the night with four RBIs.

In the 11th inning, both the Jackals and Rox had their leadoff batters reach before a pair of double plays halted each team's rally. Jackals' reliever Mike Pontius fired his second straight scoreless inning in the top of the 12 th to send the game deadlocked at six to the bottom of the frame.

In the bottom of the 12th, Jeff Grose led off with a walk which Kevin Clark followed with an infield single to place runners on first and second. After Dean Forthun popped up a bunt and Dan Betteridge grounded out to first base to advance runners to second and third, Godwin hit a slow bouncer to the left side of the infield which ricocheted off the glove of charging Brockton third baseman Shawn Williams for the game-winning single with Brockton's Hunter Davis on the mound. Brockton southpaw Brad Hertzler(0-2) took the loss in relief after surrendering the leadoff walk to Grose while Pontius (3-3) notched the win for the second straight night.

After Brockton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, New Jersey scored the game's next four runs to take a 4-2 lead through four innings. During that stretch, Jackals first baseman Jabe Bergeron ripped his 10thhome run of the season, a two-run shot just inside the left field foul pole with Godwin aboard in the bottom of the third inning.

A Grossman RBI single in the top of the fifth pulled the Rox within one at 4-3, but New Jersey countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles by Bergeron and Forthun to gain a 6-3 advantage. That score held until Brockton rallied in the ninth.

The Jackals outhit the Rox 17-8 in the contest, with Bergeron's 3-for-6 night that featured four RBIs leading the charge. Godwin added his fourth three-hit effort in 11 games with New Jersey while second baseman Travis Jones went 3-for-5 with a double. Betteridge's lone hit in six at-bats in the contest was his first career extra-base hit, an RBI double with two outs in the fourth inning.

Ryan Lobban turned in his third straight quality start for the Jackals while receiving his fourth consecutive no-decision, allowing three runs while tying his season-high with seven strikeouts over six innings. Brockton's Freddy Flores was lifted from the game with no outs in the fifth inning after yielding six runs, three earned, on seven hits in his fourth start against the Jackals this season. New Jersey relievers Edward Rodriguez and Edgar Estanga each contributed a scoreless frame while Brockton's Colin Lynch and Buster Lussier combined to toss 4 1/3 innings of shutout relief.

The Jackals (5-3 second half, 24-30 overall) and Rox (4-5, 31-25) conclude their three-game series on Wednesday morning at 11:05 a.m. when New Jersey sends left-hander Isaac Pavlik (5-3, 3.78) to the mound against Brockton right-hander Jose Aquino (0-0, 5.06). Cody Chrusciel has the live call on the Jackals webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
