Rox Start Second Half with a 'W'
July 6, 2012 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
St. Cloud Rox News Release
The St. Cloud Rox defeated the Alexandria Beetles 9-8 in ten innings Thursday
night to open the second half of the Northwoods League season with a win. Will
Flor (Jacksonville) picked up the victory in relief of Tadd Johansen (Wayne State
College).
The game was a see-saw affair, with the Rox scoring two runs in the top of the
third inning to open the scoring. The Beetles answered with three runs in the
bottom of the fifth inning off of Johansen to take the lead.
The Rox put up a crooked number in the top of the seventh inning, hanging five
runs on the Beetles to take a 7-3 lead. Phil Imholte (St Cloud State) had an RBI
single, Imholte and Andy Henkemeyer (Minnesota) scored on a Beetles error to
make the score 5-3 in favor of the Rox. Carlos Lopez (Cal State Fullerton) hit a
two-run home run to give the Rox an 7-3 lead through seven.
The lead was short lived, however, as Alexandria scored four runs of their own
in the bottom of the seventh to retake the lead. A solo home run, two-RBI double
and wild pitch added up to a 7-7 tie through seven innings.
The game went into extra innings and the Rox offense put together a rally to
plate a pair of runs in the top of the tenth. Elvin Soto (Pittsburgh) hit a triple to
score Lopez, who earlier had been hit by a pitch to start the inning. Nick Rau
(Georgia Southern) drove in Soto with an RBI single to give the Rox a 9-7 lead.
The Beetles put up a fight and got a run in the bottom of the tenth to cut the Rox
lead to one run at 9-8. Rox closer Adam Maxon (Jacksonville) induced a strikeout
with the bases loaded to secure the victory.
Fireworks Friday is tomorrow night with a battle with the Beetles scheduled for
this Friday July 6th. Fireworks will begin after the game and are presented by
Health Partners.
