Woodchucks Keep Rolling, Break Down Bombers 9-5

ATHLETIC PARK- With a fresh start to the second half of the season, and a four-way tie for first place in the Northwoods South Division the Wisconsin Woodchucks aim to contend for a top spot, and try to earn a playoff opportunity for the Northwoods league title. Friday was no exception for the 1-0 Woodchucks, as they looked to improve their record Friday night against for their second game of three against the Battle Creek Bombers. The Woodchucks would give up four runs to bring the lead down to three after a seven run lead, but in the end, the "˜Chucks would prevail with a 9-5 win.

The Woodchucks got right down to business scoring two runs on a two RBI double by Chevas Numata in the bottom of the first inning taking the early 2-0 lead.

In the second inning, with Gage Green on second base, an Oklahoma State teammate, Mike Bernal would bat in Green for the Woodchucks to take the early 3-0 lead. Then, with still no body out, Madison Carter singled up the middle, scoring Bernal to increase the lead to four runs early in the game.

The inning did not end there. With bases juiced, and no outs, the Woodchucks would take the 6-0 lead when J.D. Davis doubled scoring Brad McKewon, and Madison Carter. A sacrifice fly would bring Eric Filia- Snyder in, as the Woodchucks would score five in the second to pounce on the board early with a 7-0 lead.

The Woodchucks would not slow down, earning another run with a Madison Carter RBI single to score Gage Green and take the 8-0 lead in the third inning. After the third inning, every Woodchuck except for Jake Peter, had either driven in a run or scored to put eight on the board as they put a big gap on the Battle Creek Bombers.

The Bombers would get on the board in the fourth inning as Kyle Figgins doubled to right field scoring Dillon Moyer for the Bomber first run of the night.

Battle Creek would put another on the board when reliever Chevas Numata walked Dillon Moyer with the bases loaded and in trotted Casey Yocum to make it an 8-2 ballgame.

The Bombers however, were not done. Coming in the same inning, Daniel Rockett singled to right field with bases loaded to score Colin Willis with still no outs. The score would then be cut in half when Kyle Figgins grounded out to first base to score yet another run in the eighth inning.

With momentum and a bit of luck, the Bombers cut the lead to three with an error by first basemen Nate Irving to score Daniel Rockett who singled with his at bat.

The Woodchucks would finally get the last out when Ben Burke struck out AJ Spanel to end the four run inning for the Bombers late in the game to erase the seven run lead.

The Woodchucks, with the crowd on their toes after the four run inning from the Bombers, regained a four run lead in the bottom of the eighth when a wild pitch got past catcher Kyle Figgins to score Mike Bernal.

Ben Burke would shut down the Bombers to end the game in the top of the ninth, giving up just one walk and no hits, and helped the Woodchucks walk away with the 9-5 victory.

The Woodchucks will be back in action Saturday for the final game of a three game series with the Battle Creek Bombers at Athletic Park for more Woodchucks baseball action.
