Brockton Rox News Release

Brockton, MA - The Brockton Rox split a pair of seven-inning games with the Worcester Tornadoes on Saturday night at Campanelli Stadium; dropping the first 7-4, and winning an exciting pitchers' duel 2-1 in game two.

The first game featured Worcester's 12-game winner LHP Tom Cochran, but turned into a slugfest early. The Tornadoes took a 5-0 lead after four-run top of the third inning highlighted by a two-run triple by 1B Chris Colabello, immediately followed by a two-run home run by C Alex Trezza. However Brockton battled right back as LF Dennis Abreu cut the score to 5-3 with a three-run home run in the bottom of the inning. Brockton added another run in the fourth to make it a one-run difference before Worcester pulled away with two runs in the fifth inning en route to a 7-4 win. Cochran won his league-leading 13th game of the season.

In the nightcap, Rox RHP Mike Smith made his first start of the year and electrified the crowd out of the gates by retiring the first 12 batters of the game and striking out seven in-a-row at one point. Smith allowed one run on two hits and struck out eight. He did not allow more than one base runner in six innings of work. RHP Jerry Dunn recorded his 19th save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning. LF Jud Thigpen and DH Jason Colson each had an RBI single to produce the two necessary runs for the win.

Brockton and Worcester finish the weekend series on Sunday evening with a 5:05 PM first pitch. RHP John Kelly (6-5, 2.65 ERA) will face Worcester RHP Matt Weagle (9-6, 4.05 ERA).
