Brockton Rox News Release
BROCKTON, MA-2B Mike Torres ripped a two strike, two-out, two-run single to center field in the bottom of the sixth inning and the Rox held on to win for the second straight night by a single run, defeating the Sussex Skyhawks 3-2 at Campanelli Stadium before 2,428. LHP Rolando Viera allowed just two runs (one earned) in seven innings of work for his eighth win of the season, and RHP Edwin Morel pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his first Rox save. LF Eugene Julien and RF Joe Hough had multi-hit games for the Rox, who have won three straight games and now four straight series with wins over Sussex the last two nights. The Rox stand at 17-12 in the second half (41-34 overall). The loss is the 10th straight for Sussex.
The Rox took just five pitches to strike against RHP Jose Correa in the first. Julien led off the Rox first inning with a triple and scored on an RBI groundout by SS Mike Scanzano. Sussex scored an unearned run in the top of the second to tie the game. Both Correa and Viera pitched well as the game remained 1-1 into the sixth. The Rox had chances in the third and fourth with runners and scoring position and no one out, but failed to score in either frame. In the sixth, Sussex LF Scott Grimes hit a double to right-center field to score DH Dick Daly and give the Skyhawks a brief lead. In the bottom of the inning with 1B Francisco Lebron at third and C Jason Radwan at second, Torres hit a low 0-2 offering into center for a two-run single to give the Rox a one-run lead.
Viera pitched a scoreless seventh, RHP John Boker walked two but escaped the eighth, and Morel pitched his eighth consecutive scoreless inning to start his Rox career, a shutout ninth to preserve the win. Much like last night, the Skyhawks threatened with the tying and go-ahead runners on base in the ninth, but DH Magic Mears struck out to end the game.
Tomorrow, the Rox send RHP Brad Guy (6-4, 3.28 ERA) to the hill to face LHP Tim Tisch (1-2, 6.16 ERA) in the final game of the three- game set and season series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
