New Haven County Cutters News Release
WEST HAVEN, CT - A fielding error in the top of the ninth inning opened the door for four unearned runs for the North Shore Spirit (18-10, 43-29) and turned a 1-1 game into a 5-1 defeat for the New Haven County Cutters (15-13, 40-33), Wednesday night, in the second of a three-game series at Historic Yale Field.
In the fateful ninth inning, the Spirit put runners on the corners with two outs before a slow grounder off the bat of third baseman Morgan Brown was misplayed and allowed right fielder Andrew Wishy, who reached on a single, to score the go ahead run.
Back-to-back singles followed, including a two-run hit from centerfielder Robert Fischer, to extend the Spirit's lead to 5-1.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the eighth inning, second baseman Jose Delgado singled and stole second base to set up designated hitter Derrick Gibson's RBI base hit to even the score at one.
LHP Rolando Valles started for the Cutters and was outstanding, allowing four singles and one unearned run while striking out seven in 7.0 innings in a no decision.
All five runs scored by the Spirit were unearned.
Cutters' reliever LHP Cory Willey (5-3) yielded two unearned runs, including the go-ahead score, and got stuck with the loss.
RHP Jared Trout was strong in his 5.0 innings of work for the Spirit, allowing three hits and striking out four.
RHP Dennis Robinson (5-4) tossed 1.2 innings of relief and picked up the win.
The Cutters squandered numerous scoring opportunities early in the game as they grounded into inning-ending double plays in the second, third and fourth innings.
In the fifth, the first two Cutters of the frame reached before three straight batters struck out to end the scoring threat.
The Cutters' run in the eighth inning ended a 16 inning scoreless drought.
The third and final game of the series is set for Thursday at 7:05 p.m.
RHP Courtney Hall (2-3, 4.24 ERA) gets the nod for the Cutters with RHP Matthew Bishop (2-1, 2.29 ERA) going for the Spirit.
