American Defenders of New Hampshire News Release
(Nashua, NH, Aug. 16, 2006) The Worcester Tornadoes (11-17, 33-39) scored four runs in the eighth inning Wednesday night to snap a 5-5 deadlock on their way to a 9-6 triumph over the Nashua Pride (15-13, 32-38) before 1,331 at Historic Holman Stadium.
Worcester's New Hampshire connection led the way. Hudson's Bobby Tewksbary singled, doubled and tripled, scored twice and drove in three runs including two on his two bagger in the eighth inning uprising. Nashua native Austin Wasserman had two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Jaffrey's Elliot Shea, signed earlier in the day by the Tornadoes, had a pair of hits and a run scored and Chesterfield's Jabe Bergeron scored a run and hit a fly ball to right field in the eighth inning which was misplayed by Nashua's Jayson Bass and allowed the go-ahead run to cross the plate.
Worcester righthander, and Nashua native, Reid Willett ( 3-3) worked two and one-third innings of relief to post his first win since June 3. Jamie Merchant earned his third save, getting the final two outs in the ninth inning. D.J. Mattox started for the Tornadoes and surrendered seven hits and five earned runs over six innings.
Pride reliever Jason Blanton (2-1) suffered the loss. He took over for Pride starter Mark Hamilton in the seventh inning and failed to retire a batter, allowing four Worcester runs. In six innings of work, Hamilton allowed eight hits and five earned runs, walked two and struck out five.
Larry Bethea had a big blow for Nashua, a three-run homer in the third to tie the score at 5-5. For Bethea, his sixth home run of the season.
The Pride and the Tornadoes will meet in the rubber game of the series Thursday afternoon at 12:05. Lefthander Jarrad Lavergne (4-5, 4.43) is scheduled to pitch for Nashua. Worcester will go with its ace, righthander Junior Guerrero (7-4, 2.26).
