Rox Rock With 18 Hits In 11-7 Win

Worcester, Mass. - CF Chris Valencia went 4-for-5 with a homer and four RBI as he led the Brockton Rox over the Worcester Tornadoes, 11-7, on Friday evening at Hanover Insurance Park.

Worcester (15-25) took the initial lead of the game in the first inning on 2B Mark Minicozzi's two-out RBI single. That lead did not last long for the Tornadoes.

The Rox (23-16) pushed across five runs on five hits in the second inning. The scoring started on Valencia's RBI single and was followed by by LF Mike Conroy's run-scoring triple, 2B Scott Wearne's RBI single and 1B Melvin Falu's two-run home run.

Valencia added another RBI single in the fifth inning to give the Rox a 6-1 lead, and then in the seven inning he belted his first homer of the season, a two-run shot, to push Brockton's lead to 8-1. The Tornadoes scored one run back in the bottom of the seventh on a single by LF Ryan Crespi.

Brockton scored an unearned run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by 3B Phillip Cuadrado and then two more in the ninth on Wearne's RBI double and SS Dominic Ramos' run-scoring single.

The Tornadoes made things very interesting in the ninth inning, down 11-2, they scored five runs on five hits and the bases were loaded by Colin Lynch forced RF Stantrel Smith to fly out to end the game.

RHP Mike Smith (4-3) earned the win for Brockton with seven full innings, giving up two runs on four hits with five walks and seven strikeouts. Lynch's save is his first of the year.

RHP Matt Giusti (2-6) suffered the defeat for Worcester, surrendering six runs on 11 hits in five innings with one walk and three strikeouts.

Wearne, Ramos, Falu, Valencia and Conroy all had multiple hit games. Conroy was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored while Wearne had two runs batted in.

The finale of the series is scheduled for tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. at Hanover Insurance Park. RHP Buster Lussier (1-2) will toe the rubber for the Rox against Worcester RHP Chris Farley (4-3).
