Rox rally to beat Pioneers
June 28, 2004 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Brockton Rox News Release
The never-say-die Rox rallied from a five-run fourth-inning deficit to defeat the Elmira Pioneers, 8-5, in front of a Campanelli Stadium crowd of 2,699.
After managing only two hits against Elmira starting pitcher Matt Burch in the first three innings, the Rox erupted for five runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. Nestor Smith (1-for-3) led off the fourth with a walk, took second on a single by Saul Bustos (2-for-4) and scored on a single by Jake Daubert (1-for-4). Francisco Matos (2-for-4, 2 runs scored) followed with a single, driving home Bustos.
It was the 500th RBI of Matos's professional career, which began back in 1988. After the base hit, Rox manager Ed Nottle retrieved the ball from Burch, who tipped his cap to Matos standing at first base.
The rally would continue with a single by Aaron Fera (1-for-4), with a run scoring on a throwing error by shortstop Cleatus Davidson, and was capped off by Mike Torres's (2-for-3, 3 RBI) two-run triple, extending his hitting streak to five games.
Matos launched another Rox rally in the sixth inning with a leadoff single. The Rox executed a nice hit-and-run play with Brian Jones driving a single to right field, moving Matos to third, and extending Jones's hitting streak to five games. One out later, Torres drove home the go-ahead run with a single, his third RBI of the contest. Abner Arroyo (1-for-4, 2 RBI) crushed a two-out, two-run double, putting the Rox up, 8-5, stretching his hitting streak to eight games.
Meanwhile, Rox starter Scott Martin (4-1), who had been roughed up for four runs in the second inning, and a leadoff homerun by Yuji Nerei in the third, slammed the door on the Pioneers, retiring 12 of the last 13 batters he faced, earning his fourth victory of the season.
Matt Bennett allowed just one hit in two innings of relief, and Tony Runion struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth for his league-leading 10th save of the season. Runion also tied a team record for most saves in one month, matching the nine saves that Conor Brooks had for the Rox in August last season.
The Rox (23-8) take on the Pioneers (8-21) Tuesday at 7:11 p.m. at Campanelli Stadium. Tickets are available.
The Brockton Rox, 2003 champions of the independent Northeast League, have added three additional dates and four additional games to their schedule at Campanelli Stadium. The games will be vs. The Aces, the NEL's road team, and are scheduled for July 30 â Aug. 1 with a doubleheader July 31. For tickets call 508-559-7070 or go to www.brocktonrox.com.
