Bangor's Hammond and North Shore's Kelly named NEL players of the week
June 28, 2004 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release
Durham, N.C. -- Bangor's Derry Hammond and North Shore's John Kelly were picked by SportsTicker as the Northeast League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, on Monday, June 28. It was the first honor this season for each player, but third straight week the Lumberjacks have had the Batter of the Week.
Hammond went 8-for-21 over six games for a .381 batting average. Five of those eight hits cleared the fence resulting in him recording a slugging percentage of 1.190. In addition, he drove in 10 runs, scored six times and stole a base for Bangor, which went 5-1 last week. Originally a third round selection of the Milwaukee Brewers during the 1998 draft, Hammond is in his seventh season of professional ball, but first in the Northeast League.
Kelly tossed a complete game shut out against the New Jersey Jackals on June 24 to earn the award. He allowed five hits and struck out 11, while walking three for his third win of the season. Kelly, who also pitched a seven-inning complete game shut out in his prior outing against Elmira, is working on a 16-inning scoreless streak. Kelly, who was an 11th round selection by the New York Mets in 1994, is playing his eight season of professional baseball and second with North Shore.
