Brockton Rox News Release

(Brockton, Mass. - July 7, 2011) - Entering the seventh inning with the game tied at two, the Brockton Rox (19-19) scored 13 unanswered runs over the next two frames, knocking off the New York Federals (8-30) 15-2 and taking the first two games of a four game series at Campanelli Stadium.

Brockton did most of their damage bringing twelve hitters to the plate and scoring nine runs in the eighth frame. The inning was book-ended by Keith Brachold's leadoff home run and a three-run shot by Trey Hernandez that capped the rally.

Chris Valencia led the way at the top of the order, driving in a season high three runs, while going 1-for-3. Brachold went 3-for-5, scoring two and knocking two in, while Hernandez, Chris Grossman, Jorge Jimenez, Melvin Falu, Mike Torres and Shawn Williams each scored twice. Dominic Ramos chipped in as well with two RBIs and a run scored.

Grossman's lead off homer in the seventh gave the Rox back the lead after New York had scored twice in the sixth on two-out RBI singles from both Kyle Gerhart and Alex Sumner that chased Robert Bono (2-0).

Bono lasted five and 2/3 innings in the no decision, allowing two runs on five hits, while striking out four. He also walked four in the ballgame, three of which came in the sixth inning, leading to the righthander's eventual exit.

Daniel Schmidt (1-0) recorded the final out in the top of the seventh to swoop in for his first win of the season.

The Federals received a solid outing from Will Hassett (2-4) in his second straight start against Brockton. After giving up just one unearned run in seven innings his last time out, Hassett kept the Feds in the ballgame through six frames, but suffered the loss after exiting when trailing 3-2 in the seventh. He finished the evening allowing four runs on three hits, while walking and striking out three.

Things completely fell apart for New York's relief corps as Kyle Putnam, James McNamara, Mike Anderson and Aaron Kalb combined to allow eleven runs (seven earned) in one and 2/3 innings pitched. Most of the assault hung on Anderson, who gave up seven runs (four earned) on six hits in 2/3 of an inning in his Federals debut.

The Rox will try and continue their winning ways Friday night as ace Mike Smith (3-4, 3.68) takes to the hill with postgame fireworks to follow. New York sends Michael Streaman (0-2, 4.24) to the bump with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. The series concludes Saturday as the Rox welcome Dave Henderson to Campanelli Stadium for a Celebrity Saturday night, before the Pittsfield Colonials arrive in town for three games to finish out the homestand. All of the action can be heard live on AM 1460 WXBR and on brocktonrox.com.
