New Jersey Jackals News Release
Quebec City, QC - With the bases loaded and the game deadlocked in the bottom of the 12th inning, Quebec Capitales' catcher Patrick D'Aoust took a borderline pitch on a 3-2 count to draw a walk and force in the winning run as Quebec outlasted the New Jersey Jackals, 3-2, on Friday night in front of 4,066 fans at Stade Municipal.
New Jersey reliever Jeff Gogal, who originally entered in the 10th inning, began the 12th and surrendered back-to-back one-out singles to Bobby Wagner and Mathieu Vailleres. Gogal then struck out Jeff Helps before being relieved by Jared Locke. Quebec center fielder Goefrey Tomlinson then grounded to first, but beat Kris Sanchez to the bag to load the bases and prolong the inning. The next batter, D'Aoust, ended the game with the walk-off free pass that plated Wagner.
As Capitales' starter Matthew Rusch retired the first eight batters he faced, Quebec opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when Rene Leveret led off with a double and designated hitter Pete LaForest homered into the trees in left field to give the Capitales an early 2-0 advantage.
New Jersey broke through with a run in the top of the third. With two outs, White drew just the sixth walk doled out by Rusch this season. The next batter, Argenis Reyes, lined a hit-and-run single off the glove of Quebec center fielder Goefrey Tomlinson, who was charging in, scoring White all the way from first base to make it a 2-1 game.
That score held until the top of the sixth when White led off with a double to left and scored two batters later when Mike DeJesus rifled an RBI single up the middle to even the score at two.
Looking to improve to 8-0, Pavlik did not receive a decision but pitched well, yielding two runs on six hits over eight innings. Rusch tossed seven innings and allowed two runs on three hits with four strikeouts. Capitales' reliever Guillaume Duguay (3-0) gave up a one-out single to Myron Leslie in the top of the 12th but picked the Jackals' catcher off en route to earning the win. The loss went to Gogal (1-3), who began the bottom of the 12thinning and surrendered a pair of singles before turning the ball over to Locke.
In the loss, center fielder Chris White scored both New Jersey runs.
The Jackals and Capitales play the third contest of their four-game series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. when New Jersey sends southpaw James Leverton (5-2, 2.46 ERA), the reigning Can-Am League Pitcher of the Week, to the mound against Quebec right-hander Karl Gelinas (5-2, 3.80 ERA). Cody Chrusciel has the call on the live webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at jackals.com.
