Pittsfield Colonials News Release
PITTSFIELD, MA - David Qualben became the third consecutive Pittsfield Colonials starter to go eight innings and his offense backed him up with six runs in the third and fourth innings as the Colonials won their fourth game in a row, downing the Newark Bears 6-3.
Pittsfield dented the scoreboard first in the third inning when with runners on first and third, Angel Molina came up and delivered a two-run double down the rightfield line to score Billy Mottram and Danny Bomback to put Pittsfield up 2-0. Johnny Welch stepped to the plate next and cranked his league leading 11th homer of the season over the left-centerfield fence to make it 4-0 Colonials. The homer also extended Welch' hitting streak to 12 games.
The home team would add to their run total in the fourth to extend the lead to 6-0 when Molina took another ball into right for a single, scoring Bomback and Matt Nandin.
Newark would get a run in the fifth on an Eric McGee homer and would tack on two in the eighth to create the final score. The Bears loaded the bases in the ninth, but Matt Lyons came on with two down and got Juan Martinez to line out to left to end the game.
Qualben (3-2) allowed two earned runs over eight innings, striking out seven for the win. Eric Eden (3-1) took the loss for Newark.
The middle game of the series comes up on Friday when Miguel Flores (1-4, 3.69) goes to the hill for Pittsfield against Alex Smith (3-2, 3.76) for Newark. It is Salute to the Negro Leagues night with a double-long fireworks display sponsored by Pittsfield Co-op following the game. Governor Patrick will throw out the first pitch and the Colonials will recognize Ulysses Frank Grant prior to the game. First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m. Fans who were at Monday's July 4th game can bring their tickets with them from Monday and receive free admission.
