Three-Run First Fuels Boulders' 4-2 Win

July 7, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release

The Rockland Boulders scored three times in the first inning against Tornadoes starter Kevin Cooper and held on for a 4-2 victory at Provident Bank Park on Thursday night. Boulders ace Bobby Blevins picked up his fourth win (4-2), while Adrian Martin pitched two innings for his tenth save of the season.

The four of the first five batters for Rockland reached base in the first inning, three of them from hits. Cristobal Santana knocked in the leadoff man Sean Smith, and Scott Clement's two-RBI double plated both Santana and Vic Buttler to give the Boulders a 3-0 lead after one.

Worcester scored its first run in the third, when Chris Colabello led the frame off with a single. He moved up to second on a wild pitch by Blevins and scored when Mark Minicozzi singled.

In the top of the seventh, Alex Nunez hit a two-out solo homer to pull the Tornadoes within a run at 3-2, but the Boulders scored a run of their own in the bottom half. Clement's second double of the game lead off the inning, and he came home on Ryde Rodriguez's RBI single.

The first two batters of the eighth both walked against Michael Gardner, with Alex Trezza seeing five pitches and Nick Salotti four. Manager Dave LaPoint then brought in his closer, Martin, who got the final six outs of the game (including all three batters he faced in the eighth).

Kevin Cooper (2-1) went 4.2 innings in the loss, allowing three runs (all earned) on eight hits and two walks. He struck out three Boulders batters in his fifth start of the season. Sean Keeler relieved him, giving up one run on two hits and a walk, plus one strikeout. Michael Gedman finished off the game for Worcester on the mound, allowing one hit and no runs, striking out one hitter.

The Boulders have won two games against the Tornadoes this season, both two-run affairs in game two of the series. On June 29, the Boulders won 8-6 over Worcester at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.

Game three of the series is Friday night at 7:05pm, when the Tornadoes' ace Zach Zuercher will be on the mound. He'll be opposed by lefty starter Roger Lincoln, whom Worcester has already beat once this season.
