Brockton Rox News Release

Brockton rightfielder Guye Senjem hauled in Lucas Taylor's flyball, then threw out Zach Strong at the plate to give the Rox (11-2) a 7-6 eleventh-inning victory over the Worcester Tornadoes (6-7).

North Division-leading Brockton has defeated their hosts in the first three games of the four-game weekend series and have now compiled six consecutive wins against the Tornadoes.

Both starters were knocked out early. Rox hurler Mike Henry surrendered first inning home runs to Andy Brown and Zach Strong as Worcester built the first of three three-run leads. Overall, Henry gave up five runs (two earned) on seven hits in a stint lasting 3.2 innings.

Trailing 5-2 in the top of the fifth, Brockton rallied against Tornadoes starter Junior Guerrero, plating three runs on a single, a walk, a Kris Zacuto RBI double, a Jake Daubert RBI infield single, and a throwing error by shortstop Omar Pena. That ended Guerrero's evening at 4.1 IP, with nine hits and five runs (three earned) allowed in that span.

From that point, it was up to the bullpens to take over. Brockton reliever Manny Tejada kept the Tornadoes scoreless through the seventh inning; Tony Stutz then entered to start the eighth and hurled three more goose eggs. For Worcester, Dallas Mahan, Greg Montalbano, and David Byard combined to shut out the Rox from the sixth to the tenth.

In the top of the eleventh inning, the slumbering Rox offense woke up against new reliever Eddie Pena. Matt Cucurullo walked, advanced to second on Eugene Julien's sacrifice bunt, and came home on a Guye Senjem double. Three batters later, Senjem scored on a Kris Zacuto base hit to give the Rox a 7-5 lead.

On came Brockton closer Joey Cole in the bottom of the eleventh, but it was the Tornadoes' time to threaten. Yohanny Valera walked to open the frame and Zach Strong doubled him to third. Keith Beauregard then singled in Valera to cut the deficit to one run. A Chris Colabello sacrifice gave Worcester runners on second and third with one out, causing the Brockton manager Ed Nottle to order an intentional walk of Alex Nunez to load the bases.

Taylor followed by lofting a flyball to right field, with Strong tagging up at third base. Senjem's throw home was perfect, as Rox catcher Brian Jones received the ball well ahead of the runner's arrival and easily applied the game-ending tag.

The pitcher of record after throwing a scoreless tenth, Stutz (3-4) earned the victory for Brockton. Eddie Pena (2-2) was shouldered with the loss, allowing two crucial runs in his only inning of work. Cole picked up his ninth save.

The Rox and Tornadoes complete the four-game weekend series with a 2:05 start at Fitton Field. Jon Koch (3-2, 3.40) goes for Brockton against Alex Pena (4-2, 3.05) for Worcester.
