Rox Open Exhibition Season with Win At Home, 10-9 Over Worcester

BROCKTON - While opening day is technically still a week away, the Brockton Rox earned their first win of the 2006 season, topping the Worcester Tornadoes 10-9 in an exhibition game at Campanelli Stadium. The Rox rallied from a 7-1 second-inning deficit to take a 9-8 lead in the bottom of the ninth inning. Managers Chris Miyake of Brockton and Rich Gedman of Worcester agreed to play an additional half inning, culminating in the Rox win in 10 innings.

Worcester struck for three runs in the first inning against Rox starter RHP Robert Averette using an RBI single from SS Lucas Taylor and a two-run HR from 1B Chris Colabello. An inning later, the defending Can-Am League Champs added four runs to their scoreboard tally, climaxing with a two-run double from 3B Zach Strong.

The Rox pitching staff closed the door through much of the rest of the game, allowing just four hits in the final eight innings. RHP Brad Guy pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, The Rox used a leadoff HR by 3B Mike Torres in the third inning, a two-run blast by CF Brad Rosenblat in the sixth inning, and finally a solo HR by 1B Jake Daubert to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth. RHP Kyle George pitched a scoreless ninth for the Rox, and DH Guye Senjem drove a game-winning single through the right side in the bottom of the ninth.

The first five hitters in the Tornadoes lineup each had a multi-hit game, while Rosenblat had three hits for the Rox and Senjem added two hits and three RBI. The Rox play an exhibition game at Nashua on Friday and another in Worcester on Sunday afternoon before opening up the regular season on May 25th vs. the New Haven County Cutters at 7:05 PM at Campanelli Stadium.
