Sussex Skyhawks News Release

Little Falls, NJ - In an exhibition game between the New Jersey Jackals and Sussex Skyhawks, both Canadian-American League teams looked frustrated at the plate. Unfortunately for the Jackals, it's pitching staff couldn't pitch its way to victory.

In the top of the ninth inning, a sacrifice fly by Skyhawks center fielder James Cooper scored Scott Grimes and sealed a victory for the expansion, yet pesky, Skhawks 3-2.

The Jackals mounted a slight threat in the bottom of the ninth inning, yet, the effort was in vain. After two walks and a wild-pitch ignited the Jackals fans and bench, third baseman Wilton Veras grounded into a rally-killing double play that ended the game

The New Jersey Jackals were no hit for three innings until Bill Peavy snapped a single to begin the fourth inning. Skyhawks starting pitcher Chris Zallie pitched three solid innings, allowing an unearned run while striking out one and walking one. He was a thorn in the Jackals side.

Despite the desired punch in the lineup against the two left-handed Skyhawk pitchers (Zallie and Brian Ford), the Jackals were able to tie the score 1-1 in the bottom of the second after an error by Skyhawks shortstop, Bobby Lenoir.

Although both teams showed little pop in the bats in terms of runs-scored, Rich Daly sent an Aaron Myers pitch halfway up the right-field grassy knoll at Yogi Berra Stadium. Daly's clubbed homerun started the delicate scoring affair.

For the Skyhawks franchise, it's a victorious start against the Can-Am league.

On the other hand, the Jackals got solid pitching efforts from Josh Brey and Joe Orloski, who combined for 4 innings pitched and five strikeouts.
