Rox lose finale

BROCKTON - The Brockton Rox lost their regular season finale, falling 6-4 against the New Jersey Jackals on Monday night.

New Jersey (23-23) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Elvis Corporan doubled and scored on a Francisco Lebron single.

The Rox (29-17) pulled ahead in the fourth inning. With two outs, Willie King and Eddie Gerald came up with back-to-back singles. After Brian Jones walked to load the bases, Eugene Julien singled scoring King and Gerald to give the Rox a 2-1 lead.

The Jackals scored four times in the fifth inning, moving in front to stay. Jake Whitesides singled to score Matt Hagen and tie the game, 2-2. Tyler Brock reached on a two-base fielding error by Jake Daubert that allowed Whitesides to score and put New Jersey ahead, 3-2. Mike Rucci hit a two-run home run to extend the Jackals lead to 5-2.

The Jackals scored once in the seventh to take a 6-2 lead. The Rox scored twice in the bottom of the seventh. Brad Rosenblat tripled to score Kris Zacuto, and Rosenblat scored on a double by Daubert to make it 6-4.

"Oil Can" Boyd pitched five innings and gave up five runs, four earned, on six hits. Boyd (4-5) was saddled with the loss. Joe Orloski (8-4) pitched seven innings to get the win. Randy Rapp needed only one pitch to record the game's final out and record his 12th save of the year.

The Rox will travel to Quebec for the divisional round of the playoffs, which begin on Wednesday. Brad Guy and Grant Dorn will start the first two games of the playoffs for the Rox. "Oil Can" Boyd will be the starting pitcher when the Rox host game three of the divisional round on Friday night at 7:05. If necessary, the Rox will also host games four and five.
