Cutters victorious in regular season finale

September 5, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Haven County Cutters News Release

The New Haven County Cutters ended the regular season with a 4-2 win over the Worcester Tornadoes on Monday afternoon at Yale Field. It was the third win in four games over the Tornadoes for the Cutters, who begin the playoffs on Wednesday at Worcester?s Fitton Field.

Four pitchers were used by the Cutters in an attempt to get everyone ready for the post-season. Tim Keinath (4-7) ended up with the victory after he tossed three innings of scoreless relief. Manager Mike Church sent Adam Nikolic to the mound first, his first start of the season. He struck out the side in both the first and second innings, although he did allow his first earned run of the season in the second.

The win was preserved by Andy Weimer, who pitched out of a two on, one out jam in the ninth for his fourth save of the year.

The Tornadoes used a more conventional pitching approach. Starter Derrell McCall (6-8) went five innings in defeat, giving up four earned runs on eight hits.

The Cutters took the lead in the bottom of the fifth when back-to-back doubles from Keith Stegbauer and Jared Boyd plated three of the four Cutters runs. Boyd?s two-bagger came in his first Yale Field at bat.

The first Cutters run came off the bat of Jeff Brooks. He belted his 11th home run of the year, a solo shot to left-center in the home half of the second.

The win leaves the Cutters with a final second half record of 28-18 and a .500 record for the entire season, 46-46. Games one and two of the divisional series will be played at Worcester. The series shifts to New Haven County on Friday for a 7:05 game three.
