September 5, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release
NEW HAVEN 4, WORCESTER 2 @ West Haven, Conn. Time: 2:54 ATT: 1,296 W: Tim Keinath (4-7) L: Derell McCall (6-8) S: Andy Weimer (4) HR: NHC - Jeff Brooks (11) The Cutters won to take three out of four from Worcester in what they hope will be a preview of the South Division playoff series starting Wednesday. The Tornadoes got on the board first when LF Keith Beauregard drew a bases-loaded walk in the second. New Haven quickly tied the score in the bottom half of the inning on 3B Jeff Brooks' solo home run and picked up three more in the fifth to break the game open. 3B Jared Boyd, pinch-hitting for Brooks, had the inning's big blow, a two-out, two-run double. Beauregard drove in the Tornadoes' second run with a seventh-inning fielder's choice. Tim Keinath was awarded the win in relief, allowing two hits and no runs in three innings of work. Derell McCall took the loss, giving up four runs on eight hits in five innings. Andy Weimer recorded the final two outs of the game for New Haven and claimed his fourth save of the year. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- QUEBEC 11, ELMIRA 2 @ Quebec City, Quebec. ATT: 5,087 W: Jason Benson (3-1) L: Kyle George (1-3) S: None HR: QBC - Eddie Lantigua 2 (31), Todd Leathers (17) More than 5,000 fans saw 3B Eddie Lantigua hit his 30th and 31st homers and the rest of the team didn't disappoint either, pounding out 13 hits to thrash Elmira in the regular season finale. The Pioneers didn't help themselves, committing six errors leading to five unearned runs in the game, and four Quebec relievers silenced the Elmira bats, twirling a scoreless inning apiece. Lantigua had three hits and three RBIs on the night, and RF Benoit Emond collected a trio of base knocks as well, driving in one and scoring once. 1B Todd Leathers hit his 17th home run for Quebec, bringing in two, and SS Josh Fulton hit twice and scored twice. C Clay Kuklick and SS Ryan Dorsey each drove in a run for Elmira, who saw themselves swept on the road to finish the season. Jason Benson got the win for Quebec, allowing six hits and two runs in five innings while collecting five strikeouts. Kyle George took the loss, giving up five runs, two earned, and six hits in 5.1 innings. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- NEW JERSEY 6, BROCKTON 4 @ Brockton, Mass. Time: 2:23 ATT: 3,036 W: Joe Orloski (8-4) L: Dennis Boyd (4-5) S: Randy Rapp (12) HR: NJJ - Mike Rucci (2) The Jackals picked up four runs in the fifth inning off Rox starter Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd and it was enough to propel them to victory over the North Division's second-half champs in the final game of the regular season. Brockton took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on SS Eugene Julien's two-run single, but New Jersey RF Matt Hagen led off the fifth with a single and 2B Jake Whitesides drove him in with a triple. Whitesides later scored on an error by 3B Jake Daubert and C Mike Rucci's two-run homer capped off the scoring in the inning. New Jersey picked up a final run in the seventh, providing enough of a cushion to weather Brockton's two-run bottom half. Shawn Morgan pitched 1.2 innings of perfect ball in relief of starter Joe Orloski, who got the win, before Randy Rapp came on to record the last out and his twelfth save.
