Brockton Rox News Release

WORCESTER, MA - (September 7, 2009) - A game which held no bearing on the regular season or playoffs for either the Brockton Rox or the Worcester Tornadoes lasted 11 innings and required 13 pitchers before the Rox came away with a 7-6 win at Hanover Insurance Park. Brockton swept the Tornadoes in the season-ending series and won its last eight regular season games.

CF Chris Valencia drove in the winning run in the top of the 11th inning with an RBI fielder's choice. His slow roller was scooped up by Worcester SS Mike MacMillan who tagged out DH Palmer Karr running to third base. As MacMillan turned to throw to first, he caught a spike on the lip of the infield grass and tumbled into the infield prohibiting the double play, and allowing 1B Clyde Williams to score the eventual winning run.

The 11th-inning lead was the fourth different lead of the game for the Rox who never trailed in the contest. Brockton led by scores of 1-0, 2-1, 6-2, and 7-6.

The teams went to extra innings because of a solo home run by RF Carlos Sosa in the seventh inning who had entered the game just minutes before as a defensive replacement. The teams combined for four home runs on the day. Worcester's RF Alex Pena also homered and joined Brockton's Williams, and 3B Phillip Cuadrado.

RHP Adam Piechowski took the win for the Rox, handling the ninth and tenth innings, and closer RHP Jerry Dunn tied his own Rox single season record with his 24th save of the season in a scoreless 11th inning.
