Brockton Rox News Release
Little Falls, N.J. - Rox 2B Scott Wearne went 3-for-4 with two RBI, but it was not enough as Brockton fell in defeat, 4-2, to the New Jersey Jackals on Friday evening at Yogi Berra Stadium. The Rox are 27-19 with one game remaining to play in the first half of the season.
The contest was scoreless through the first two innings, but Brockton took the initial lead in the third. 3B Derek Kinzler led off the frame with a single, moved to second on LF Mike Conroy's sacrifice bunt and then scored on the RBI single by Wearne.
The Jackals (18-27) jumped ahead in their half of the fourth inning when they scored two runs on three hits. Both runs crossed the plate with two outs. DH Abraham Nunez singled with one out and was plated on 2B Travis Jones' run-scoring double. Jones then came come on SS Mike DeJesus' single as New Jersey took a 2-1 lead.
Brockton tied the game up in the seventh after CF Chris Valencia hit a first-pitch double to lead off, move to third on a groundout by Kinzler and after Conroy was hit by a pitch, Wearne delivered his second RBI single.
The tie score only lasted until the home half of the seventh where New Jersey reassumed the lead on LF Jeff Grose's suicide squeeze that scored DeJesus from third. The Jackals added an insurance tally in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Jones which plated Nunez, who had singled two batters earlier.
New Jersey starter Ryan Lobban received a no-decision after going 6.1 innings, allowing two runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and two walks. The bullpen finished the game, pitching 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up just one hit. RHP Edward Rodriguez (3-3) earned the victory with 0.2 innings and one strikeout.
LHP Mike Wlodarczyk (6-2) was a hard-luck loser for the Rox, surrendering three runs on seven hits in seven full innings with five strikeouts and one walk. RHP Colin Lynch allowed an unearned run in the eighth with one hit, one strikeout and one walk.
Wearne was joined by C Chris Grossman and Valencia with multiple hits, as Grossman was 2-for-4 with a double and Valencia finished 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
Nunez had two hits for the Jackals and reached base three times. DeJesus was the other Jackal with two hits with a 2-for-4 night.
The finale of this three-game series is scheduled for Saturday night at Yogi Berra Stadium. The Rox will send out RHP Freddy Flores (5-1) to the mound against New Jersey LHP Isaac Pavlik (3-3). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
