Sussex Skyhawks News Release
Augusta, N.J. - Carl Loadenthal went 3-for-4 with a triple and drove in two runs as the Sussex Skyhawks (24-21) evened their series with the Worcester Tornadoes (19-27) Friday night at CenturyLink Field at Skylands Park. Starting pitcher Mike Vicaro overcame a 43-pitch fifth inning and allowed just two runs over five frames while scattering two hits and three walks in his third win of the season, and three Sussex relievers combined to preserve the win for Sussex. Matt Salvato, the team's ERA leader (1.26), earned his first save by recording the 27th out with the tying run standing on second base.
The Tornadoes opened the scoring in the first inning when leadoff hitter Stantrel Smith singled, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error by Sussex catcher Ryan Boelsen and then scored on an RBI single by Chris Colabello. Vicaro bounced back nicely from the early hiccup and retired the next 11 consecutive Worcester batters. In the meantime, the Sussex offense came alive and scored its first runs of the series after suffering a shutout the night before. The Skyhawks tallied two in the bottom of the first thanks to RBI singles from Loadenthal and Kris Sanchez and added two more in the third when Loadenthal tripled to score Chase Fontaine and scored on a sacrifice fly by Caleb Stewart.
That would be all the run support the Sussex pitching staff would need. Vicaro was tested in the fifth with two 10-plus-pitch at-bats that each resulted in walks, but the Randolph, N.J. native escaped with just one run of damage done when Nick Giarraputo started an around-the-horn, 5-4-3 double play to end the inning with the bases loaded and one out.
Reliever Kevin Gunter held the Tornadoes scoreless in three innings of work while striking out three, and Jared Locke recorded the first two outs of the ninth. After walking former Skyhawk Ryan Crespi and allowing an RBI double to Mike Baillargeon, however, Locke handed the ball over to Salvato. Worcester's Stantrel Smith flew out to right fielder Khyle Dimino to end the game, stranding Baillargeon in scoring position.
