Brockton, MAâ The Rox lost a heartbreaker to the Bangor Lumberjacks, 7-6, Sunday in front of a Campanelli Stadium crowd of 3,458.
Geronimo Mendoza, looking for his first win of the season, gave up just one run on five hits, while striking out three over five-plus innings.
The âJacks took the lead on Kaz Kohno's solo home run in the second inning.
The Rox came back with two runs in the fourth as Nestor Smith singled to right and stole second. Francisco Matos doubled to left, scoring Smith. Matos went to third on Jake Daubert's ground out and scored on Kris Zacuto's sacrifice fly to center, giving the Rox a 2-1 edge.
The Rox added a run in the fifth when Brian Jones's single scored Mike Torres, who had walked and stole second.
In the sixth, the Rox put two more runs up as Matos hit his second home run of the season, a solo shot to right. Daubert, on third after a walk and a failed pick-off attempt, scored on Chad Stewart's single, putting the Rox ahead, 5-3.
But the Rox could not hold the lead as the bullpen surrendered six runs over the final three innings, giving the âJacks a 7-5 advantage.
The Rox scratched out a run in the ninth as Smith, on base after being hit by a pitch, scored on Matos's second double of the game, to finish off the scoring, 7-6.
Matos went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI, raising his NEL-leading average to .389...Jake Daubert extended his hitting streak to six games...Jones, Smith, and Matos â the team's four, five, and six hitters â went a combined 6-for-13, with four runs scored and four RBI...The Rox and âJacks combined for eight stolen bases, six hit batters, and 10 pitchers used.
The Rox (2-5, 29-24) travel to New Jersey for a three-game set with the Jackals beginning Monday. They return to Campanelli Friday to begin a 10-game homestand, opening with a four-game series â including a doubleheader on Saturday â with the Aces.
