New Haven County Cutters News Release
(Quebec City, Quebec July 25, 2004) The New Haven County Cutters failed to earn a split of their four game series with Quebec on Sunday, falling to the Capitales 9-5. The Cutters (27-27) are now back at the .500 mark on the season and are 2-5 in the second half as they continue their road trip against the Bangor Lumberjacks starting on Monday night.
The Capitales grabbed the early lead in the bottom of the first on a Shane Hopper RBI single driving in Geof Tomlinson for the gameÂfs first run. New Haven starter Skip Wiley then retired the next seven batters before the combination struck again in the third. With two out and nobody on, a Tomlinson double was followed by a Hopper RBI single up the middle giving Quebec a 2-0 lead.
In the fourth, Adam ShorsherÂfs ground ball to third was thrown away by Hopper allowing Kevin Forbes to score all the way from first and cut the Quebec lead to 2-1.
Quebec answered back in their half of the inning as shortstop Lee Delfino hit a two-run homer over the left field wall extending the Capitales lead to 4-1. For Delfino, it was his fourth home run of the season.
In the top of the fifth, it was the Cutters shortstop showing off his power. Jose Mateo, who before Saturday nightÂfs game hadnÂft hit a homer since 1996, hit a solo shot off Quebec starter Danny Prata trimming the Quebec lead to 4-2. For the switch-hitting Mateo, the homer was his second of the year, one from each side of the plate.
In the bottom of the fifth with two out, Shane Hopper reached base on an error by right fielder Darren Ciraco. Eddie Lantigua then doubled scoring Hopper as Quebec regained their three run advantage at 5-2. Les Capitales then added to their lead in the sixth on a RBI sac fly by Olivier Lepine making it a 6-2 game.
The Cutters battled back in a big way in the seventh against Prata as a Nick Hiter leadoff walk was followed by a P.J. Johnston single putting runners on first and second with nobody out. After Prata retired the next two batters, Darren Ciraco atoned for his earlier error by blasting a three run homer over the left field wall bringing the Cutters to within one at 6-5.
However, the Capitales would tack on two runs in the eighth and an unearned run in the ninth against the Cutters bullpen to pull ahead 9-5. Lefty Danny Prata (4-3) went seven innings allowing five runs, four earned on nine hits to pick up the win. Skip Wiley (3-5) tossed 5 and 1/3 innings allowing six runs, five earned and took the loss.
After every Friday night home game this summer, a fireworks show will light up the New Haven sky. ÂgWin Jonathan FleisigÂfs MoneyÂh is during every Saturday Game at Yale Field where fans can actually win money from the owner of the Cutters for watching and enjoying a night at the ballpark. Every Sunday is a WEBE 108 Family FUNday with plenty of entertainment to keep all ages entertained. Tickets for these games and others are available by calling the Cutters front office, 203-777-5636, or through the teamÂfs website, cuttersbaseball.com.
