Brockton Rox News Release

BROCKTON - The Brockton Rox (21-25) finished the first half of their first season in the Can-Am League with a humbling 11-3 defeat at the hands of the New Jersey Jackals (25-21).

The Jackals collected 17 hits in the game, giving them 41 hits and 27 runs in the final two games of the first half. The Rox lineup also reached double digits in hits in each game, 21 total, but left 19 men stranded on base. The loss secured Brockton's place in the cellar of the North Division.

For the second consecutive day, Brockton scored first, scratching out a run in their first at-bat on a Matt Cucurullo lead-off single, a wild pitch, a groundout, and a Guye Senjem sacrifice fly.

But New Jersey quickly responded, posting two runs in their half of the first, adding on three in the bottom of the second, and then putting the game away with a four-run fourth inning. The rally culminated on a line drive to centerfield off the bat of Darren Ciraco that was misplayed by Cucurullo and bounced all the way to the wall. By the time the Rox outfielder returned the ball to the infield, Ciraco stood on third and two runs had scored for a 9-1 Jackals lead.

Rox starter Manny Tejada (4-6) suffered the loss, surrendering 11 hits and seven earned runs in just 3.1 innings. Joel Bennett (4-0) recorded the win for New Jersey, entering in relief of starter James Mondecir in the fourth inning and hurling two scoreless frames. Bennett and Mondecir were two of five New Jersey pitchers to take the mound, as Jackals manager Joe Calfapietra balanced the load for his staff in preparation for a league off-day Thursday.

Brockton starts the second half with a three-game weekend series at North Shore. Oil Can Boyd will start Friday for the Rox, Kevin Beavers pitches Saturday, and Grant Dorn will throw on Sunday in the final game before the All-Star Break.
