Cutters Falter in Final Game of First Half
July 13, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Haven County Cutters News Release
The final game of the Can-Am League first half saw the New Haven County Cutters fall to the traveling Grays 7-3 on Wednesday night in the rubber match of their three-game series.
For the third game in a row, the Cutters got off to a quick start, scoring in their half of the first inning. But just like in Monday?s game, the Grays stormed back.
Mark Comolli, normally a reliever, was given the start tonight and used his knuckleball so that he could conserve arm strength and be available for the weekend series against the New Jersey Jackals. But the knuckleball can be a double-edged sword, difficult to hit yet difficult to control. Both those facets of the pitch were evident tonight.
In the bottom of the second Comolli struggled to find the strike zone, first allowing a leadoff single to Francisco Lebron, the back-to-back walks to Willie King and Brad Hargreaves to load the bases. With the bases loaded and no outs, the Grays did considerable damage and before the inning was over had tallied five runs.
After the second, Comolli exhibited how effective the knuckleball can be, retiring 15 out of 16 batters at one point.
Grays starter Lincoln Mincks surrendered three runs over his six and two thirds innings, but was helped immensely by reliever Andrew Edwards, who bailed him out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the seventh. With two outs, Mike O?Keefe singled, which was immediately followed by a Derrick Gibson base hit. After Bill Peavey walked and the score at 5-3, Jeff Brooks strode to the plate with a chance to tie or possibly take the lead. But Edwards got Brooks to ground out to third baseman Larry Best to end the threat.
The first half might be over for the Cutters, but the All-Star break is not until Monday. The New Jersey Jackals come to town for their second consecutive weekend series starting on Friday at 7:05. It is Harry Potter night at Yale Field. 500 copies of the book will be sold to fans at midnight, the instant they become available to the public.
