
Rox Drop Opener to Duluth

DULUTH: The St. Cloud Rox dropped their first game as members of the Northwoods League 6- 1 to the Duluth Huskies on Wednesday night at Wade Stadium in Duluth. Huskies starter Joey Novak (1-0, Harvard) struck out nine Rox batters in six innings of work, including three K's in the first inning, to earn the victory.
After a scoreless first inning St. Cloud's Adam Martin (Western Carolina) made history by recording the Rox first-ever hit. Martin smacked a double to earn his place in NWL hIstory with two outs in the second.
A walk, wild pitch and single got the Huskies on the board first in the bottom of the second inning.
Andrew Grifol (Broward College) hit a two-out single to score Luke Campbell (New Mexico) and break the ice.
Will Huff (Erskine) got the Rox on the board for the first time in 2012 with a sacrifice fly to score Billy Soule (Minnesota) in the top of the third. Soule reached on a walk after a long battle with Novak then was advanced to second base on Phil Imholte's (St. Cloud State) sacrifice bunt. Ryan Kiesel (Trinity Christian) hit a single to advance Soule to third and set up Huff's historic RBI.
The Huskies retook the lead for good in the bottom of the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Brian Hansen (St. Cloud State). Duluth would add one run in the bottom of the fifth and three in the bottom of the sixth to provide the final margin of victory.
Rox starter Alex Roberts (0-1,Newberry) pitched his way out of a few jams to keep the damage done by the Huskies eight hits to a minimum. On the night, Roberts allowed three runs in five innings and walked two while striking out one. Andy Fagely (Concordia-St. Paul) pitched three innings of relief and gave up three runs on six hits.
The Rox and Huskies are scheduled to do battle once again on Thursday night, with Tadd Johansen getting the start for St. Cloud. First pitch is scheduled for 7:35 in Duluth.
