Beetles Open Season with Win over Thunder Bay
May 30, 2012 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Alexandria Beetles News Release
Alexandria, MN - Will Fulmer reached base in five of his six plate appearances and every player in the starting lineup reached base at least once as the Alexandria Beetles dismantled the Thunder Bay Border Cats 12-3 in the Northwoods League Season Opener on Wednesday.
Fulmer, in his second year with the Beetles, was hit by two pitches, recorded a single and double, and pulled off a delayed steal of home to spark a potent Beetles offense that pounded out 12 hits, four for extra bases.
Ben Moore led the team with three RBIs and David Garcia and Dylan Rapper added two-RBI doubles of their own.
On a pitch count, Michael Reed (1-0) earned the victory with four innings of five-hit ball while walking and striking out two.
Coley Bruns (0-1) took the loss for the Border Cats after allowing six runs (five earned) in four innings of work, walking five and striking out five.
Third-baseman Scott Donley had three hits in five at-bats, finishing a triple shy of the cycle, for the visitors.
The Beetles jumped on the board first in the bottom of the first inning after Fulmer was hit by a pitch and Johnny Tolson reached on an error. With one out, Moore lined a single into left to plate the pair.
Donley picked one back for Thunder Bay with a solo shot over the right-center wall.
Alexandria tacked on three more in the third on four hits with Moore delivering a big double and Jon Traetow and Josh Carpenter picking up two-out hits.
In the fifth inning, Alexandria blew the game open with a four-spot on three hits with a rope by Raper to the wall in center plating two and Fulmer scoring Raper on a double of his own.
Alexandria added two more in the seventh with Garcia's double for the final of 12-3 as Beetles coach Drew Saberhagen picked up the victory in his managerial debut.
The Beetles and Border Cats return to the field at 11:05 Thursday morning for the final of the season-opening two-game set.
