Brockton Rox News Release
BROCKTON â The Rox defeated the Bangor Lumberjacks, 5-3, Saturday night at Campanelli Stadium in front of 4,186, on the strength of Derek Andersen's pitching.
Andersen, who evened his record at 5-5, threw a career-high nine strikeouts, going seven-and-a-third innings, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks.
The âJacks got on the board first, scoring all three of their runs in the first inning.
The Rox came back with a run in their half of the first. Chad Stewart led off with a walk, took second on a wild pitch, and went to third on Saul Bustos's single. A Mike Torres sacrifice fly to center scored Stewart, cutting the âJacks lead to 3-1.
The Rox added three in the second, as Francisco Matos (3-for-4, 1 run scored) opened the inning with a double to left. Jake Daubert's (2-for-3, 1 run scored, 1 RBI) double to center scored Matos. With the bases loaded after Kris Zacuto reached on an error by third baseman Paul Powell and Mike Sandoval was hit by a pitch, Daubert scored on Saul Bustos's fielder's choice, as Sandoval was cut down at second. Kris Zacuto also scored on the play on second baseman Rolando Bello's error, putting the Rox up, 4-3.
The Rox put up another run in the sixth. Nestor Smith walked and went to second on a wild pitch. Matos beat out a bunt attempt for a single, moving Smith to third. Zacuto's ground out scored Smith, giving the Rox a 5-3 edge.
The win ended a four-game losing skid for the Rox, their longest stretch of the season. Tony Runion picked up his 13th save, pitching a scoreless ninth, allowing one hit and striking out one. Tony Stutz entered the game with one out in the eighth, allowing no hits and striking out one.
