Jackals and Aces split twin bill

Little Falls, NJ – The Northeast League Aces and the New Jersey Jackals split a highly contested double header, with both teams winning 6-5 ballgames.

In a seesaw first game, the Aces were relentless, narrowly defeating the Jackals 6-5.

The Aces capitalized on a shaky start from New Jersey's Jackson Crowther. Four consecutive players singled before recording an out in the game, putting two runs on the board.

The Jackals utilized the long ball in the bottom half of the inning to get them back into the ballgame. With two outs, Aces' starter Josh Neitz walked Kevin Grijak and Wilton Veras, leading up to a three-run homerun by Wady Almonte. The following batter, Chris Rowan, crushed his team leading eleventh homerun of the season, making it a 4-2 ballgame.

One run would cross the plate for the Aces in the top of the second. An RBI single by Dalmiro Quezada, made it a one run New Jersey lead.

A solo homerun by Al Corbeil, tied the game for the Aces in the top of the third inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Jackals would re-take the lead. Kevin Grijak singled, scoring John Anderson, giving the Jackals a 5-4 advantage.

We would see another lead change in the top of the fifth. RBI's by Chad Gambill and Yohanny Valera, again put the Aces on top 6-5.

Mario Gonzalez picked up the win for the Aces, in relief. He pitched two and two thirds innings, while giving up one hit and also striking out one.

New Jersey starter Jackson Crowther was roughed up in his second consecutive outing. Crowther got the loss, while giving up 11 hits and six earned runs.

For the Aces, Chad Gambill was 3-4 with three singles and two RBI. Al Corbeil also went 3-4 with a homerun and two RBI.

Kevin Grijak, of the Jackals, went 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

In Game Two, the Jackals returned the favor, staging rallies of their own, and defeating the Aces 6-5.

In the top of the first, the Aces again scored two early runs against the Jackals. Coby Smith scored on an error, while Chad Gambill singled scoring Eddie Gerald.

They would add to their lead in the second. Coby Smith hit his fourth homerun of the season, a two-run shot, making it a 4-0 Aces advantage.

The Jackals would begin their rally in the bottom of the second. A Wady Almonte solo homerun put the Jackals on the scoreboard.

New Jersey would tie the game in the bottom of the third. A two RBI single by Kevin Grijak and a sacrifice fly by Wilton Veras, evened the score at four runs a piece.

The Aces would re-take the lead in the top of the fourth on an RBI double by Coby Smith.

The Jackals would respond with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead. An RBI double by Juan Infante, in addition to an RBI single by Zack Smithlin, put the Jackals in the lead, 6-5.

Jackals' starter Mike Perkins pitched five innings, while picking up the victory. He gave up five runs, four of them earned, on five hits, while fanning five.

Angel Miranda, of the Aces, tossed six innings in a losing effort. Miranda gave up six earned runs on nine hits. The loss was his third of the season.

For the Jackals, Wady Almonte was 2-3 with a homerun and one RBI.

Aces' centerfielder Coby Smith was 2-3 with a homerun, a double, and three RBI.

The Northeast League Aces and the New Jersey Jackals complete their series on Sunday, July 25, 2004. The first pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. at Yogi Berra Stadium, in Little Falls, NJ.
