Brockton Rox News Release
BROCKTON â The Rox proved to be poor hosts for the New Haven County Cutters this weekend at Campanelli Stadium, completing a three-game sweep with a 6-1 win Sunday afternoon over the Cutters, in front of a sell-out crowd of 5,005. The Rox finished off the weekend trifecta with another solid performance from their starting pitching â this one from Scott Martin.
In the three-game series with the Cutters, Rox starting pitching gave up just two earned runs over 23 innings. (Rox relievers went four innings, giving up no runs.) Martin (2-0) went 7.1 innings, allowing one earned run on seven hits, while striking out five.
The Cutters lone run came in the second inning on a Kevin Forbes solo home run to left field.
The Rox opened the scoring on Nestor Smith's (3-for-5, 2 RBI) lead-off home run in the first inning, his first home run of the season, giving the Rox a 1-0 edge.
The Rox added three runs in the second inning when Kris Zacuto (1-for-3), Mike Torres (1-for-3), and Smith hit consecutive singles to right field, to load the bases. Abner Arroyo's ground out to first base scored Zacuto. Aaron Fera's (2-for-2, 2 RBI) single to center brought in Torres and Smith, giving the Rox a 4-1 lead.
In the third, the Rox added another run when singles to right from Francisco Matos (2-for-3) and Saul Bustos (2-for-3) put runners on the corners. Zacuto's sacrifice fly to right scored Matos from third.
In the seventh, Chad Stewart (1-for-1), pinch hitting for Fera, walked and stole second on the next pitch. With Stewart on third after a wild pitch, Bustos's single to center brought Stewart home, putting the Rox ahead, 6-1.
The win extends the Rox victory streak to three games, while stretching the Cutters losing streak to five games.
The Rox take on the North Shore Spirit Monday at 7:11 p.m. â the first time the two teams meet since last season's championship series, when the Rox swept the series, 3-0. Tickets are available.
