Brockton Rox News Release

(Newark, N.J.) - The Brockton Rox (9-3, 35-23) rolled into Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium Friday night and jumped all over the Newark Bears (7-5, 30-29) for an 11-2 game one victory.

The Rox spread the offense around as Mike Torres, Keith Brachold and Dan Barbero each connected for a game high three RBIs.

Torres continued his hot stretch following his four hit night in Quebec City on Thursday with three doubles and two runs scored against the Bears on Friday.

Brachold and Barbero each went 2-for-4 with a home run and a walk.

Things got off to a rough start for Chris Rollins (1-2) in his first start of the season as he lasted just one inning, while allowing a run on two walks, a hit batsman and a wild pitch before getting pulled for Adam Gabel.

Brockton had no problem facing the Bears bullpen, scoring in six of nine innings and putting up a combined ten runs on twelve hits against Gabel, Kyle Morrison and TJ Hose.

Jake Loye (2-4) impressed in his first start for the Rox, picking up the win. He tossed seven quality innings, allowing two runs on six hits, while striking out three and walking one. The only damage against Loye came in the second frame after Ryan Walsh and Chase Fontaine scratched hits to open the inning and were driven home on a Billy Alvino sacrifice fly to right and an RBI single by Paddy Matera.

Rox newcomer and former New York Federal Zach Woods chipped in with two scoreless frames to finish out the ballgame in his Brockton debut.

Chris Valencia swiped three more bases, adding to his league leading total that now stands at 30 steals. He also reached base in 4-of-5 at bats and scored a game high three runs.

The Rox go for back-to-back series wins on the road behind righthander Mike Smith in game two Saturday night. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. at Riverfront Stadium.
