Brockton Rox News Release
(Brockton, Mass. - July 19, 2011) - Mike Smith (6-4) delivered a quality start for the Brockton Rox (2-0, 29-20) on the way to a 7-4 win, his team leading sixth of the season, against the New York Federals (0-3, 10-40) on Tuesday night at Campanelli Stadium.
The Brockton bats gave Smith (7.0 IP, 4 H 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 8 K) the early lead, starting with Ryan Royster's two-out RBI single in the second frame and five straight singles, driving in three runs in the third inning to mount a four run lead.
Smith's eight strike outs marked a new season high for the righthander, but the Feds were still able to chip away at the lead in the middle innings.
Three singles in the third yielded a run, followed by two more runs scored in the fifth inning on a walk, a hit batsman, two wild pitches, an error and a single that cut the Rox lead to one.
James Kukucka (2-4) took the loss for the federals, allowing four runs on eight hits in six innings, before making way for Mike Anderson in the seventh.
After allowing the first two batters of the inning to reach base, Andersongave up a run on a Keith Brachold RBI groundout and a two-run blast from Melvin Falu (7).
The four run cushion proved to be enough as Jimmer Kennedy, Mark Rosenand Jake Hale combined to record the final six outs. Hale's save was his second in as many chances and his active team leading third of the season, as the tall righty retired the game's final batter.
Chris Valencia extended his hitting streak to 17 games (10 multi-hit games), while going 2-for-5 with two stolen bases and a run scored.
Falu went 2-for-3 in the game with two runs scored and three knocked in, while stealing a base.
Mike Torres, Chris Grossman, and Ryan Royster each also had two hits in the game.
Shawn Williams extended his on-base streak to 23 games with a single in the sixth.
The Rox can tie their record for consecutive wins at home with an eleventh straight victory in the series finale Wednesday night. Country music fan Dustin Birosak (5-0, 1.85) toes the rubber on Country Music Night, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m as the Rox go for the second half opening sweep of the Federals at Campanelli Stadium.
