Can-Am League Game Recaps

July 19, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release

Newark 18, Worcester 4

Bears C Eric McGee took only three swings Tuesday night against Worcester. But he sure did make them count, blasting a seventh-inning solo home run in his first plate appearance and a two-run homer one frame later. His second four-bagger put his club on top, 18-4, and concluded all scoring in the 14-run Newark win over the Tornadoes. As the final score would indicate, McGee's teammates built a hefty lead before the 6-foot-3 catcher from Cedartown, Ga., even set foot on the diamond. Newark RF Pat Biserta made sure of that, rocketing a grand slam in the first inning to give Newark a 5-0 lead. McGee and Biserta were joined in Tuesday night's home run club by LF Burt Reynolds, as the trio combined to go 6-for-11 with seven runs and nine RBI thanks to their four home runs.

New Jersey 5, Rockland 4

The Boulders nearly pulled off a miraculous comeback, but a heads up defensive play from the Jackals preserved their one-run win. With two on, two out and his team trailing, 5-2, in the ninth, Boulders RF Ryde Rodriguez singled to New Jersey RF Nick Santamauro, who - instead of trying to make a play at the plate - sent the ball to second where Rodriguez, the potential tying run, was tagged out trying to stretch the single into a two-bagger. Jackals 3B Nick Giarraputo and 1B Kris Sanchez each picked up an RBI in the fourth inning to get the scoring started, and both had impressive nights. Giarraputo went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI while Sanchez went 2-for-4 while scoring once and batting in three. Starting New Jersey pitcher James Leverton left the game after eight with the win all but in hand. And while the final frame made it a little closer than Leverton would have liked, he still picked up the win, shutting out the Boulders in his eight innings while allowing five hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Brockton 7, New York 4

Rox DH Melvin Falu hit his seventh home run of the season, and starting pitcher Mike Smith struck out eight, as Brockton defeated New York, 7-4. Falu batted in three and scored twice to highlight a 2-for-3 night. The Rox never trailed, while the Federals managed to tie the score just once - a 1-1 knot in the top of the third inning. But a three-run third for Brockton put the home team on top for good. Smith threw seven innings for the Rox, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks. Federals 2B Dan Barbero took advantage of a dropped third strike in the fifth - scoring from third as the play at first was too late - to pull New York within one. But that was as close as they would get the rest of the night.
