Rox Bats Stifled; Lose Finale, 4-2

Little Falls, N.J. - New Jersey starer Isaac Pavlik allowed just one run on six hits over 6.2 innings to lead the Jackals over the Brockton Rox, 4-2, on Saturday evening at Yogi Berra Stadium in the finale of the first half of the season.

The Jackals (19-27) took two of three from Brockton in the series as they began the scoring for the night in the second inning on C Jovan Rosa's first homer of the season, a two-run shot to left-center field.

The Rox (27-20) answered back in the top of the third with a run on a two-out single by RF Keith Brachold, who now has a team high 35 RBI on the season.

New Jersey pushed across single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to build a 4-1 advantage. The fifth saw 1B Jabe Bergeron deliver an RBI single and later on in the sixth 3B Mike Scanzano chipped in with a sacrifice fly.

Brockton would grab a run in the ninth inning off of closer RHP Romas Hicks on 2B Scott Wearne 's RBI groundout, but Hicks would close it down leaving the tying run on second base.

Pavlik (4-3) is now 3-0 against the Rox this season in three starts as he compiled four strikeouts and just one walk. Brockton starting RHP Freddy Flores

(5-2) suffered his second straight defeat after giving up four runs in six innings with nine hits, two walks and a season-high seven strikeouts.

RHP Dan Griffin threw and 1.1 perfect innings for the Jackals out of the bullpen, and Hicks picked up his 12th save in 14 chances in the ninth. The Brockton bullpen combined for two scoreless innings with LHP Brad Hertzler allowing one hit in the seventh and RHP Jose Aquino facing the minimum in the eighth.

Brachold was the only Rox player with multiple hits in the game as he went 2-for-4 with the third-inning RBI. LF Mike Conroy reached base twice on two walks, while 3B Derek Kinzler was 1-for-4 with a double and DH Clyde Williams was 0-for-2 but reached on a hit by pitch and a walk, and he scored a run.

CF Adam Godwin went 3-for-4 for the Jackals with a double and a run scored. Mike DeJesus had another solid contest for New Jersey with two hits and two runs scored and Rosa added a double to his second-inning homer.

The first half of the season is complete as the Rox finish in second place to the champion Quebec Capitales. After a day off on Sunday, Brockton will be back at Campanelli Stadium on Monday night to begin a three-game set with the Pittsfield Colonials. It will be RHP Wayne Lundgren taking on Pittsfield's RHP Miguel Flores in a 6:05 p.m. start.
