Sussex Skyhawks News Release
Augusta, N.J. - July 17, 2010 - The Sussex Skyhawks (25-21) concluded the first half of their Can-Am League season in victorious fashion on Saturday, defeating the Worcester Tornadoes (19-28) at CenturyLink Field at Skylands Park, 2-1. The Skyhawks and Tornadoes combined for just seven hits in a brisk contest that lasted a manageable two hours and twenty minutes.
Sussex took the lead in the bottom of the first after starting pitcher Tim Stringer retired Worcester 1-2-3 in the top half; Kraig Binick led off with a double to right field, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Carl Loadenthal. Caleb Stewart flew out to end the first, but after another scoreless frame in the top of the second from Stringer, Kris Sanchez unloaded a solo homerun over the right field wall to lead off the bottom half, giving the Skyhawks an early 2-0 cushion.
The home team did not record a hit after the second inning, but Stringer and three Sussex relievers were able to maintain the lead for the duration of the game. Stringer worked around three hits and four walks over six scoreless innings of work, and Donald Jordat, Matt Salvato, and Jared Locke each contributed an inning in relief. Locke came in to start the ninth and surrendered a leadoff double to Worcester's Alex Trezza but rebounded to induce a popout, groundout and strikeout to end the game and earn his second save of the season.
The 2-1 victory marks the first time this year that the Skyhawks have won a game without scoring at least four runs.
Sussex finished in third place for the first half and will begin its second-half campaign in Quebec on Monday night against the first-half champions. After a three-game set with Les Capitales, the Skyhawks will return to Skylands Park for a three-game series with the New Jersey Jackals. Thursday night's showdown starts at 6:35 p.m. and will feature a fireworks display after the conclusion of the game.
