Rowney Loses Tooth, Wins Game 1 for Penguins in Overtime, 3-2

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Playoff hockey is known as time when players pay a price to win games. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins' Carter Rowney became the newest name on a long list of people to learn that lesson.
Rowney may have lost a tooth from an errant stick that caught him in the face back in the second period, but he didn't have to wait for the tooth fairy to give him a reward, as he scored the overtime game-winning goal for his Penguins to take down the Providence Bruins 3-2 in Game 1 of the Atlantic Division Semifinal on Wednesday night.
"Lose a tooth, score a game-winning goal? That's a pretty good trade, I guess," Rowney said with a gapped smile after the game. "I think anyone in this locker room would make that trade to get the win."
Rowney's retribution goal just 1:09 into the extra frame lifted the Penguins to a 1-0 advantage over the Bruins in the best-of-five opening round series.
The first goal of the 2016 Calder Cup Playoffs went to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton when Jake Guentzel tipped in a point shot off of a face-off play at 13:13 of the opening frame.
A mere 18 seconds into the second period, Dustin Jeffrey extended the Penguins' lead to 2-0 after Kael Mouillierat forced a turnover behind the Bruins' net.
Providence got on the board when Max Talbot set up Seth Griffith for a tap-in goal behind Casey DeSmith, making it 2-1 at 14:50 of the second.
Colby Cave brought the contest to a 2-2 tie with a shorthanded goal for the Bruins at 8:44 of the third.
After the buzzer sounded at the conclusion of 60 minutes of play, the two teams went to the locker room for intermission while fans at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza stuck in their seats anticipating the sudden death overtime period that would determine which team jumped out to the early series lead.
Rowney justified the home crowd's patience by playing the role he did so many times during the regular season, that of overtime hero. Rowney led the Penguins with three OT game-winners during the 2015-16 campaign.
DeSmith, who was appearing in his first ever Calder Cup playoff game, stopped 31 of 33 shots in the win. Bruins goaltender Jeremy Smith denied the Penguins 24 times on 27 shots.
The Penguins take their 1-0 series lead into Game 2, tomorrow night at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. Individual game tickets for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton home playoff games can be purchased at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza box office, through all Ticketmaster outlets, or by contacting the Penguins directly at (570) 208-7367.
Thursday's game between the Penguins and Bruins is scheduled for a 7:05 start.
